Through their efforts, a total of $63,851 was pledged. The amount was $23,500 more than the quota set for Hartley. The American Legion Auxiliary was planning to host a chicken dinner at the Legion Hall. The dinner was an annual event for many years but was discontinued during wartime rationing. Facing defending state champion West Hancock in the third round of the Class A playoffs, the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Hawks saw their postseason run end as West Hancock earned a 56-18 win Friday night at Britt. The Hawks stayed with the Eagles early in the game despite some hurdles along the way. But in the end, West Hancock exerted its will and took advantage of every opportunity presented to them. "We did some good things overall," Hawk coach Tyler Horkey said. "When we had mental breakdowns,...

  • Character does really count

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Nov 5, 2020

Postseason athletic honors are often determined by a player's performance during competition. But at least one award focuses on contributions that cannot always be measured statistically. Olivia Grooters, a senior at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn, is the recipient of such an honor. It is the E. Wayne Cooley Award, which is presented by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union According to H-M-S volleyball coach Cheryl Kroese, the award is presented to someone who "demonstrates character and...

  • 'Business as usual' for making up snow days

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Oct 29, 2020

The Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Community School District plans to take a "business as usual" approach toward making up classroom time lost due to inclement weather. The possibility of using virtual instruction to minimize lost "snow days" was discussed at the Oct. 19 school board meeting. Superintendent Patrick Carlin said H-M-S could make up lost time on the dates already scheduled, or online learning could be utilized as an alternative, especially later in the year. Carlin said there would be...

    • Oct. 25, 1945 Work was completed on the enlargement of the Hartley Creamery to the north of the building. Additional equipment necessitated the addition. The creamery was constantly improving its facilities to benefit its patrons. A new dryer was installed at the Hartley Dry Cleaners. Passersby were interested in seeing how the large green piece of machinery would get into the building. The feat was accomplished by enlarging the rear door. Happy news to all members of the family was word that shoe rationing had been lifted. It had been a s...

  • H-M-S heads to Britt for third-round playoff matchup

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Oct 29, 2020

To paraphrase a line from the TV series Star Trek, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn is going boldly where no previous Hawk football team has gone before. Where the Hawks are going is to the third round of the football playoffs. No previous H-M-S team had won a second-round playoff game until last Friday night. With that accomplishment behind them, the Hawks now focus their attention on West Hancock (8-1), who will host Friday night’s Class A Pod A matchup at Britt. “The kids appreciate where they are at,” Hawk coach Tyler Horkey said. “We’re happy we...

  • Deserving what they earned

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Oct 29, 2020

Last Friday night's cold and windy conditions were the perfect backdrop for the kind of football Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn wants to play – run the ball and be solid on defense. The Hawks did both as they won their playoff rematch with Gehlen Catholic, 38-6, at Peterson Field in Hartley. The Class A state playoff qualifier banner presented after the game highlighted the fact that for the first time, H-M-S had won a second-round postseason game. "That was H-M-S football. They deserve what they've e...

  • A tall obstacle to overcome

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Oct 29, 2020

Another rematch with a War Eagle Conference opponent was Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's challenge in the second round of the Class 1A regional volleyball tournament. Playing Akron-Westfield on Oct. 14 at Remsen, the Hawks were unable to reverse the outcome of the regular season meeting six days earlier at Akron. The result was another loss to the Westerners, who won in three sets (25-19, 25-20, 25-19). The Hawks had more total attacks (92-82) than Akron-Westfield, but they also had more hitting...

  • Repeat performance

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Oct 29, 2020

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's first match in the Class 1A regional volleyball tournament had a familiar feeling to it. The Oct. 19 contest paired them with War Eagle Conference member Harris-Lake Park and it was played in Hartley, as was the regular season match. More importantly, set results mirrored that of the first encounter and so did the final outcome – a 3-1 victory for the Hawks. Set scores were 26-24, 18-25, 25-19, 25-19. H-M-S had a strong night at the net, recording 141 attacks and 40 k...

The district is purchasing two off-lease 84-passenger buses for a total of $170,000. • Oct. 18, 1945 The opening of the Coast to Coast store owned and operated by Bud Epping and Carl Hain had to be considered a success as evidenced by the 1,000 doughnuts that were consumed during the day. A good “eating” time was had by all. Forty of the high school boys and three men of the faculty members planned to clear off the newly purchased lots being added to the athletic field. Steps were being taken by the board of education to see that the field was graded at the earliest possible date. Owners of many cars in Hartley were repor...

  • Same score, different path to second win over MMCRU

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Oct 22, 2020

Having defeated MMCRU by a 62-0 margin in the regular season, the chances that Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn could duplicate that score in the first round of the Class A football playoffs seemed remote. But the Hawks did just that, handing MMCRU a 62-0 loss Friday night at Peterson Field. The path to H-M-S's first playoff win since 2010 was slightly different than the regular season meeting with the Royals. In the first quarter of the September 25 contest, H-M-S scored on "drives" of two, one, two and...

  • A tough road for the Hawks

    Mike Petersen, Sport Editor & Staff Writer|Oct 22, 2020

Three road trips last week did not end with any wins for the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn volleyball team. The Hawks closed out the regular season with a record of 5-15 overall and 1-9 in War Eagle Conference play. • vs. Hinton In a rescheduled contest on Oct. 12, the Hawks were defeated by Hinton, 3-1. After getting off to a slow start in the first set (10-25) and falling short in the second (23-25), H-M-S broke through for a win in the third set (25-18). The Hawks could not sustain the momentum a...

    • Oct. 18, 1945 W.R. Wagner, secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, received confirmation from Mr. Wallace that the Pioneer Hybrid Seed Corn Company had definitely decided to construct a seed corn plant in Hartley as soon as building materials were available. The company had purchased the ground upon which the plant was to be located, which was just west of Hartley on the railroad line. The open house at the Fairmont Creamery was very gratifying to W.H. Mohr and the employees. Around 700 people made a tour of the modern poultry plant. The H...

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Oct 15, 2020

Iowa high school playoff football begins Friday night, Oct. 16, featuring a matchup of two Class A District 1 teams at Peterson Field in Hartley. Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn will take on MMCRU for the second time this fall, having won the district contest, 62-0, at Marcus on Sept. 25. While every team qualifies for the playoffs this year, H-M-S is not taking for granted the program’s first postseason appearance since 2013. “We will show up and practice like we always practice,” Horkey said. “Our kids understand they have a job to do.” The Iowa High...

  • It was all about the team

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Oct 15, 2020

Individual athletes committing to the team concept is usually the key to success. That was certainly the case for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's volleyball team as it defeated Harris-Lake Park, 3-1, on Oct. 6 in Hartley. "It's probably the best team ball we've played. That made a huge difference," said Hawk coach Cheryl Kroese. H-M-S needed a unified effort to overcome an early deficit in the first set. After losing their advantage, the Wolves forced three ties but they were not enough to prevent the...

  • Homecoming week ends with a flourish

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Oct 15, 2020

After overcoming near-disaster early in Friday night's Homecoming game with Lawton-Bronson, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn pulled away for a convincing 46-20 win at Peterson Field. "We definitely came to play," Hawk coach Tyler Horkey observed. "The kids played great. They needed to see everything come together and be successful at it." Lawton-Bronson had a golden opportunity to get on the scoreboard first, recovering a fumble at the Hawk 2. But the defense rose to the occasion and stopped the Eagles...

  • Staying in the title hunt

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Oct 8, 2020

Early in the Class A District 1 matchup between Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn and Akron-Westfield on Oct. 2, it appeared whichever team had the ball last would win. Every time H-M-S scored in the first quarter, Akron-Westfield would answer. But that scenario came to an end as the Hawk offense scored twice before halftime, the defense blanked A-W the rest of the game, and both units scored in the fourth quarter to wrap up a 50-18 win at Peterson Field. The Westerners matched each Hawk touchdown in the...

  • Falling on hard times

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Oct 8, 2020

After staying close to the .500 mark during the first half of the volleyball season, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn has found the going tough in terms of getting back into the win column. The Hawks dropped their fifth-straight match to South O'Brien (11-25, 22-25, 19-25) in War Eagle Conference action on Oct. 1 in Hartley. The Wolverines' early lead in the first set was never seriously threatened. H-M-S started strong in the second set to build an 11-7 lead, lost the advantage and briefly regained it....

  • Big-ticket item purchases to be accelerated

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Oct 1, 2020

Big-ticket purchases usually made by the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Community School District later in the year are on course to occur this fall. Items specifically discussed at the Sept. 14 school board meeting are buses and technology. Superintendent Patrick Carlin recommended those purchases be made now rather than waiting until next spring. “It sounds like a good idea to me,” Board Member David Vander Broek responded. According to the August transportation report, six of the district’s buses have in excess of 150,000 miles – including one wit...

The national observance of Forget-me-Not Day held in Hartley netted a sum of $126.13. Response to the drive for funds for disabled war veterans was excellent. The United Service Women were only sorry that the supply of little flowers was exhausted before everyone could...
