Just a week after the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn School Board's decision to have the district continue to cover the costs of student lunches came word that it will not be doing so. In a communication sent on Monday, Superintendent Patrick Carlin informed H-M-S families that student lunch costs cannot be covered by the district. "It is with much disappointment that I must announce that the H-M-S Community School District will not be able to extend the covering of lunch cost as previously announced...

South O'Brien built a double-digit lead in the first half but Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn found a way to overcome a cold shooting night to earn a 46-38 win. H-M-S won the game on Jan. 16 at Paullina despite only making 17-of-71 shots from the floor. The Hawks were also at a disadvantage at the foul line, where they were 5-of-8 compared to South O'Brien which was 11-of-19. Despite trailing by five points in the first quarter and 22-10 at halftime, H-M-S did not make many significant changes during...

A long layoff had some effect on Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's bowling teams during their first action of 2024, but both were still victorious during a triangular on Jan. 16 at Sanborn. The Hawk girls finished with a 1,830 team total, topping West Sioux which finished with 1,695. Emmetsburg does not have a girls' team. The cost of lunches for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn students will continue to be covered by the district through the end of the current school year. H-M-S began covering the cost of student lunches in December on a two-month trial basis. That was done, in large part, due to the balance in the district's Nutrition Fund. With that balance still in excess of $600,000 as of Dec. 31, board members decided on Monday to continue covering student lunch costs. "We certainly have the capacity to continue it...

  • Maybe back to square one

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Jan 18, 2024

The process of getting Royal’s Main Street repaved has hit another bump in the road. During discussion in December, council members indicated interest in having the city take on the project. It was hoped that excessive costs for engineering and upgrades to intersections, sidewalk approaches and street lighting could be avoided. Mayor Josh Toft reported at the Jan. 10 council meeting that he was told by an engineer that any municipal project costing over $100,000 must be engineered and open to public bid. “I guess maybe we’re back to squar...

    • Jan. 13, 1949 The Hartley municipal skating rink was made ready for use for the first time. Adverse weather conditions held back its construction. Many of Hartley’s young people were making good use of it. Heavyweight champion Joe Louis boxed a four-round exhibition against Orlan Ott before 3,800 spectators at Topeka, Kan. The champ barely developed a sweat as Ott bored in. Louis laced Ott a few times, but he smiled and patted the Hartley native on the back after each round. Lon MacDowell, local chairman of the March of Dimes drive to aid...

The Hawk girls used a 12-point advantage in the fourth quarter to wrap up a 62-41 win on Jan. 11 in Hartley. H-M-S made 43 percent of its shots from the field, including 8-of-15 from three-point range, and dominated the glass by a 41-26 margin. The Orabs rolled to a 25-8 lead in the first quarter, scoring many of their points off Hawk turnovers. The scenario for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn in its first boys' basketball game after the holiday break was similar to that of the game just before Christmas – a good start for the Hawks followed by the opposing team taking control of the contest. Playing at Harris-Lake Park on Jan. 5, the Hawks led for most of the first quarter. But they would give up the lead and then fall farther behind as the game progressed. The outcome would be a 63-25 loss. H-M-S led 10-4 in the early stages of the game a...

H-M-S will join the pool on Jan. 1, 2024. Superintendent...

Considering the potential costs and requirements that accompany any grant funding the city might receive for the project, Mayor...
