  • On their heels

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Oct 17, 2024

Lack of aggressiveness hampered Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn on both sides of the football during a 48-14 loss to Sibley-Ocheyedan. The result of the game played Oct. 11 kept the Hawks winless on the road. The winners rushed for nearly 300 yards and added 134 through the air, while H-M-S was limited to 186 yards of total offense. "We've got to find a way where we're not getting on our heels on either side of the ball," said Hawk coach Jeremiah Delzer. "At times we got on our heels and we weren't...

Good starts and strong finishes contributed to positive results for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn cross country runners at the George-Little Rock/Central Lyon Invitational. The meet was held Oct. 10 at the Otter Valley course near George. "I thought we ran decently and competed hard," Hawk coach Naet Hoaglund observed. "The ladies were spot on hitting serves," Hawk coach Cheryl Kroese said. "H-LP was really struggling with their serve receive and our girls did a fantastic job of hitting...

  • They were ready to roll

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Oct 10, 2024

Whatever distractions there may have been during Homecoming week had little effect on Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's football team. The Hawks saw their lead cut to six points in the second half, but a pair of late scores sealed a 44-26 win over South O'Brien on Oct. 4. Having reminded the players all week that the only thing they would remember about Homecoming is whether or not they lost the game, Hawk coach Jeremiah Delzer was pleased with how they responded. "I think they did a good job of buying...

The Hawks played from behind for much of the match, starting with the opening set. After trading leads later in the set, H-M-S went ahead for good at 17-16. It was a week of ups and downs for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn cross country runners, as evidenced by results of meets hosted by Alta-Aurelia and South O'Brien. H-M-S began the week on Sept. 30 at Alta, where the boys finished 10th out of 13 teams. "I thought as a whole we were a little flat entering the race. We seemed a little mentally and physically drained, and some of our times reflected that," said Hawk coach Naet Hoaglund. "It's a good opportunity for us to find some grit and persevere...

Several drivers were mistaking the streets of Hartley for a raceway and were using them to race each other. Representatives from all the high school classes comprised the cast of “Boys About Bob...

  • Slow starts make things tough for Hawks

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Oct 3, 2024

Slow starts made things challenging for the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn volleyball team in action last week. The Hawks started slowly at their home tournament on Saturday. Okoboji took advantage in the opening match of pool play to earn the 21-8, 21-16 sweep. H-M-S reversed the trend against Sioux City West, jumping out to a 10-1 lead in the first set en route to a 21-12 win. The Wolverines led early in the second set, but the Hawks outscored them 12-6 down the stretch to close out a 21-11 win. In th...

Several small things put Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn at a big disadvantage against Kingsley-Pierson/River Valley in their non-district football game. Hawk turnovers directly led to two KP/RV first-half scores, and two scoring drives in the third quarter sealed the Panthers' 40-12 win on Sept. 27 at Kingsley. An interception early in the game gave KP/RV the ball at midfield and they took advantage, scoring on a 12-yard pass from Landon Howe to Kevin Wright. The Panthers would score again on a 33-yard...

  • Property sale approved by Royal council

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Sep 26, 2024

A residential parcel in Royal is poised to go back on the property tax rolls. Laef Lundbeck was the only interested bidder to appear at the city council meeting on Sept. 18. He offered $3,000 for the parcel located at 110 Long Street. That amount was the minimum the council would accept. The city acquired the lot in June of 2023 from Marilyn and Ken Means, and has removed the house. The lot is adjacent to Lundbeck’s property. Lundbeck asked if the city would agree to remove a tree on the property. As part of the motion to accept Lundbeck’s bid...

Reaching a major accomplishment during an athletic career is great. Doing so when your team wins on its home court makes it really special. Frankie Mohni experienced both during Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's volleyball match on Sept. 16. The senior recorded the 1,000th set assist of her career, and the Hawks swept West Sioux to earn their second win in War Eagle Conference play. Mohni has been the model of consistency as the Hawks' setter. After starting her career with 54 assists as a freshman,...

  • Physicality rules for the Royals

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Sep 19, 2024

The result of Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's football game at Marcus might have been due to the fact it was played on Friday the 13th. But other factors also contributed to the 44-0 loss to MMCRU. Six penalties, four turnovers and an inability to generate much offense against a physical opponent also led to the Hawks' first loss in Class A District 1 play. "They were just crazy physical," Hawk coach Jeremiah Delzer said. "They had a good game plan, they were super physical and they found our...

  • Win some, lose some

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Sep 19, 2024

How well Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn fared in close sets determined the outcome of two War Eagle Conference volleyball matches last week. The close sets went H-M-S's way in a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over visiting Trinity Christian on Sept. 10. It was the Hawks' first in conference play. It did not appear there would be any close sets after the Tigers won the first two by identical 25-14 scores. "We talked prior to the match about being aggressive offensively. In the first two sets, we weren't...
