• July 22, 1948 Power spraying equipment again made the rounds of the Hartley business section, spraying backs and fronts of the buildings for continued protection against disease-carrying flies. Heat followed by heavy rains tended to destroy the potency of the DDT spray. A damaging hail and windstorm swept in from the northwest. Most extensive damage in the immediate area was reported south of Melvin where crops were virtually wiped out, a number of buildings blown down, trees uprooted and some poultry and hogs were killed. Out of the hail a...
One benefit of finishing with a better record in War Eagle Conference play is that a team has more players earn all-conference recognition. That is the case for the 2023 Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn softball team, which landed five players on all-conference teams due to a fourth-place finish. Gracie Knobloch was named to the all-WEC first team for the second straight year. The sophomore led the Hawks in nearly every offensive category, as well as starting 17 of their 23 games in the pitcher's circle....

Statistically, the team showed improvement in pitching and defense, but did not hit the baseball as well. Four seniors end their careers after contributing in many ways to the program. The number of varsity games they played...

The only item veto involved policy in the Judicial Branch appropriations bill. The section in question dealt with a situation in eastern Iowa where attorneys who do not pra...

Royal residents and passersby are seeing an updated look for the community's water tower. Central Tank Coatings, of Elgin, painted the water tank and supporting structure earlier this month. City officials acknowledged at last week's council meeting that the tank colors (gold and royal blue) did not turn out quite as they expected. They also questioned how readable the white lettering with yellow background for "Royal America" was from a distance. However, most of the comments about the water...

At some point you have to...
