The Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Community School's website will become more accessible to district patrons and other users in the coming months. Following a presentation on Monday, school board members agreed to switch from Blackboard, the current website manager, to Apptegy. According to Superintendent Patrick Carlin, there have been issues with Blackboard and the agreement with them is about to expire. "We have been investigating options for a district app and website platform. Apptegy seems to be...
Physicality was still Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's primary objective during the 2022 Homecoming football game. But H-M-S also successfully passed the ball to complement a potent rushing attack. That combination led to a 47-point halftime lead and an eventual 66-34 victory Sept. 16 at Peterson Field. Kooper Ebel nearly broke free to score on the first play from scrimmage, but needed just one more snap to reach the end zone. His 27-yard run just 28 seconds into the game gave H-M-S a 6-0 lead. Travis K...
Homecoming week at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn got off to a rousing start with the volleyball team's 3-0 sweep of visiting South O'Brien on Sept. 12. The Hawks earned their second straight War Eagle Conference win by scores of 25-10, 25-19 and 25-21. "Getting the sweep against South O'Brien was a great way to start Homecoming week," said Hawk coach Cheryl Kroese. "I definitely felt like some of the momentum from the West Sioux win carried over." The Hawks dominated at the net, recording nearly twice...

The ebb and flow of the first three sets of Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's volleyball match on Sept. 8 indicated a positive trend line for West Sioux. But prospects soon brightened in a big way for the home team, who dominated the final two sets to claim a 3-2 win. H-M-S earned its first War Eagle Conference win by scores of 24-26, 25-22, 23-25, 25-14 and 15-2. The momentum shifted as often in each of the first three sets as the final outcomes. "I felt like our girls were trying to do the right...
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn cross country runners' times and team finishes at the Sibley-Ocheyedan Invitational on Sept. 6 showed vast improvement since the last time they competed on the course at Sibley. Both varsity teams recorded better scores than they did in 2021, and several individuals' times were faster than they previously ran. "Our kids are off to a strong start to the season," said Hawk coach Kirsten Taylor. "Our boys' total team points were almost cut in half in comparison to last...
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn stayed true to its identity while South O'Brien showed some new wrinkles when the two teams clashed Sept. 9 at Peterson Field in Hartley. The Wolverines had some success throwing the football but it was not enough to offset the Hawks' physical style of play. The result was a 22-6 win that keeps H-M-S atop the Class A District 1 standings. "I thought we played very physical. Our physicality is what we asked our kids to do," said Hawk coach Jay Eilers. "Just proud of our...
Big plays. Long drives. A goal line stand. Leads that appeared to be safe. Comebacks that fell short. All of that illustrates the kind of game Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn and Gehlen Catholic played Sept. 2 at LeMars. The Hawks' physical style of football prevailed, but not without a fight. They led by as many as 23 points but needed a late score to hold off Gehlen Catholic for the 50-35 win. "I felt like this was our kids' night," said Hawk coach Jay Eilers. "I was just so proud that they came out...

After playing two close sets with Sibley-Ocheyedan, the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn volleyball team could not sustain that effort in the final two sets. The Hawks lost the match played Aug. 29 at Sibley by scores of 24-26, 27-25, 18-25 and 16-25. The teams traded leads for much of the first set and a series of ties was only broken when S-O scored the final two points. H-M-S was able to return the favor in the next set. "We saw some definite improvement from last week," said Hawk coach Cheryl Kroese....

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn opened the 2022 volleyball season at the usual place and came away with a familiar result on Aug. 23. The place was the West Lyon tournament and the result was a 1-2 record in three matches. H-M-S came close to getting its first win against Akron-Westfield. The Hawks earned a 21-16 win in the first set and the Westerners returned the favor in the second. Akron-Westfield then won the tiebreaker (15-10) to claim the match. Four kills each by Abby Douma and Elise Haack, and...
Friday night's football season opener between highly-rated West Sioux and Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn at Hawarden was a stark contrast in offensive approaches. West Sioux (Class 1A No. 2) scored six touchdowns and none of those drives lasted more than 2-1/2 minutes. The Hawks (Class A No. 3), on the other hand, had two scoring drives with a combined 38 plays that took over 21 minutes of game time. Hawk coach Jay Eilers felt the 38-18 loss came down to a few key moments. "High school football comes...
Sixteen years of providing medical care to residents of O'Brien County and the surrounding area are coming to an end for Dr. Soe Nyunt. Nyunt came to Hartley Mercy Medical Clinic in 2006. It proved to be a good fit, as he is board certified in family practice. "This has been the primary clinic for 16 years, serving the rural communities and seeing all kinds of patients," Nyunt said. In addition to practicing at the clinic, he also provided care for residents of Community Memorial Health Center....
The Royal City Council wants to improve the roads that provide access to a major grain storage facility in Clay County. But accomplishing that requires money, and accessing one potential funding source has been challenging. In a discussion this month with Chairperson Barry Anderson of the Clay County Board of Supervisors, Mayor Josh Toft said the city needs farm-to-market funds to improve roads leading to AgState's facility in the northeast section of town. "We've asked for funds to help with...
It wasn't anything like an official game, but Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn and Spirit Lake's football teams put on the pads and helmets for a scrimmage Friday night at Hafer Field in Spirit Lake. The varsity offenses each ran 12 plays against the varsity defenses, followed by 12 plays by the JV offenses against the JV defenses. They repeated that sequence before each varsity offense had three chances to make a first down in a short yardage situation. Game 1 for both teams is Friday night. H-M-S...
The 2022-23 school year at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn will begin next Tuesday and the district is ready to welcome students to their classrooms. Initial indications are that H-M-S will have more students to welcome. Final enrollment will not be determined for some time, but the district is anticipating over 30 newcomers. That trend seems to apply at the high school, where at least 11 new students are enrolled. "We continue to get more students, which is a great thing," Principal Nate Hemiller said...
"It's not apples to apples. It's confusing." That was Royal Mayor Josh Toft's comment during the August city council meeting as he passed out bid sheets for painting and repairing the water tower. As anticipated, three companies did submit bids. However, they were not consistent in terms of the work they proposed to do to the tower. One proposal called for inspecting and painting the tower and 30,000-gallon tank, which is what the council wants to have done. Another bid covered replacing the lad...

Superintendent of Public Works Jaron Benz recommended ordering the John Deere backhoe immediately, as the company will impose a 5 percent price increase for equipment not ordered by Aug. 1. Items being ordered with the base...

• July 31, 1947 Very light showers brought some relief to the abnormally high temperatures experienced the previous two days. The thermometer reached a maximum of 102 on July 29. Farm crops withstood the intense heat well but were badly in need of rain. Occasion for the festivities was the Everly AMVETS Post celebration. Representatives of the O’Brien County newspapers were entertained at Paullina by...
Increased costs and limited availability are impacting some of the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Community School's purchases. A bus ordered earlier this year will cost more than the original bid price. School Bus Sales Co. notified H-M-S that Blue Bird Body Company has implemented a supplemental invoice program which will increase the cost of buses already ordered. The additional cost for H-M-S is $3,500. School Bus Sales stated they are "only passing down the exact amount of the supplemental invoice...

She indicated some language in the document, which was prepared by the school’s attorney, Steve Avery, could not be included on the ballot. According to discussion, the district then asked Ahlers & Cooney, P.C. to prepare an amend...
