The 2021 football season at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn will rank with some of the best in the history of the program. Records of 8-3 overall and 6-0 in Class A District 1, including two playoff wins, offer some measure the Hawks' accomplishments this fall. But Hawk coach Jay Eilers feels there was more to a successful season than just results on the field. "Greatness is not about record, it is about people," he said. "We accomplished greatness this year." There were some oddities about the season....

Retaining boards were put in place to hold the water in a specified area and flooding was to begin as soon as cold weather was here to stay. A strong Hartley football squad added another victory to its list wh...
Once again, West Hancock proved to be Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's nemesis. After eliminating H-M-S from last year's Class A football playoffs on their way to a state title and winning this year's regular season matchup in non-district play, West Hancock parlayed big plays on offense and a stifling defense into a 27-0 win in quarterfinal action on Nov. 5 at Britt. Unlike the non-district game on Oct. 1 when West Hancock had several double-digit play drives, H-M-S's defense did not allow any...

Statistics may not lie, but they do sometimes tend to blur the whole truth. Despite losing four fumbles in the first half, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn still dominated North Butler in a 26-7 win Oct. 29 in the second round of the Class A football playoffs at Peterson Field. The Hawks lost the turnover battle (4-2) but still outgained North Butler by a significant margin in total yardage (388-152) and scored twice in the second half to seal the victory. Hawk coach Jay Eilers told the players after the...
It seems inevitable that Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn and West Hancock would eventually meet in the Class A football playoffs. The two teams played in the third round of the 2020 postseason at Britt, where West Hancock won, 56-18. During the 2021 regular season, H-M-S and West Hancock were paired again for a non-district matchup in Week 6. The defending Class A champions won that game, 20-6. Now they meet again this Friday, again at Britt, and again with a berth in the playoff semifinals on the line....

He was assigned to the 168th Vet. Food Inspection Detachment in Berlin, Germany. He was in charge of inspecting all food entering Berlin for the U.S. Army, and gave...
Sioux Central was one win away from advancing to the next round of the 2A regional volleyball tournament, but Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn had other ideas. Coming back from a 2-1 deficit, the Hawks defeated the Rebels, 3-2, on Oct. 18 at Sioux Rapids. A surge midway through the first set gave H-M-S the lead, but Sioux Central's late rally made the 25-23 final score seem closer than it was. "We came out strong," said Hawk coach Cheryl Kroese. "We were passing the ball well and executing well...

H-M-S also trailed in the final two sets but was more compe...

The 2021 regular season ended just as it started for the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn volleyball team. The Hawks steadily lost ground in each set as they were unable to generate enough points on offense or counteract the net strength of the Westerners, who recorded 34 kills. H-M-S had a...
