Changes are in store this summer for the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn softball program. Those start with a new head coach. Stephanie Bronstad, who was a varsity assistant since 2018, succeeds Carissa Post who led the program for three seasons. Bronstad is no stranger to H-M-S softball. Only a handful of strokes prevented Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn from advancing to the second round of the Class 1A girls' regional tournament. Competing in the first-round meet on May 17 at Primghar, H-M-S finished with a team score of 462. A committee of elected officials and city staff will soon begin the process of reviewing recommended changes to Royal’s Code of Ordinances. Darren Bumgarner, a planner with Northwest Iowa Planning and Development Commission, is finalizing the first draft of the revised ordinances. Like their female counterparts, the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn boys' golfers found themselves in an unusual tie with MMCRU when their War Eagle Conference meet ended. Both teams finished play last Friday at Marcus with identical 180 team scores. But unlike the H-M-S girls, the boys didn't find the tiebreaker to be as friendly.
