    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Jul 9, 2020

How do you spell relief? V-I-C-T-O-R-Y. Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's baseball team hadn't been on the plus side of the scoreboard prior to their June 30 game at George-Little Rock. So when the visitor's score read "3" and the home team's said "1" at the end of the game, the Hawks had plenty to celebrate. "For me it was relief," Hawk coach Jeremy Gloden admitted. "That was the first time when we put a full seven innings of really good baseball together." Junior Sam Heyn followed up a strong pitching...

  • Late innings trip up H-M-S softball team

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Jul 9, 2020

Opponents' late-inning scoring sprees kept Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn winless in three softball games last week. An eight-run fifth inning in South O'Brien's 13-2 win was a sign of things to come. The Wolverines added four runs in the first inning and another in the third during the June 29 contest in Hartley. "We were able to keep ourselves in the game through our defense," Hawk coach Carissa Post said. "But then our defense slowly started to fade and we ended up with costly errors." H-M-S cut the...

A better night at the plate supported by good pitching and defense was a successful formula for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's softball team, which defeated Trinity Christian, 11-5, on June 24 at Hull. Among the Hawks' 12 hits were a triple and two singles by Brynn Webber; a double and two singles by Hannah Jochims; and a double and a single by Bailey VerHelst. Cadence Klein, VerHelst and Webber each drove in two runs. "It was a nice win for the girls," Hawk coach Carissa Post said. "Offensively we di...

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Jul 2, 2020

After surrendering 26 runs in two previous games, the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn baseball team had chances to get into the win column at South O'Brien on June 25. But nine runners left on base put the Hawks on the wrong side of a 3-1 score. H-M-S took the lead in the second inning when Sam Heyn singled, stole second base and scored on an error. Keaton Graves and Jordan Ortega later singled in the inning, but the Hawks could not get them home. That set the pattern for the game. H-M-S stranded a...

  • Young group to mix with veterans on Hawk baseball team

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Jun 18, 2020

Beyond the fact that the 2020 baseball season could be held despite the COVID-19 pandemic is encouraging news that Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's numbers are growing. H-M-S had just 13 players out for baseball in 2019, barely enough to field a varsity team and too few to play a JV schedule. That's not the case in 2020. The preseason roster numbers 20, which includes a combined 16 sophomores, freshmen and eighth graders. As a result, H-M-S will play JV games along with varsity contests this year....
