    • April 14, 1949 Norman Bruegmann, of Hartley, enrolled in the annual competition of the Fisher Body Craftsman’s Guild. He was working on the design and construction of a model automobile in hopes of winning a cash award and a university scholarship. The spring merchandise fair sponsored by the Hartley Chamber of Commerce drew capacity crowds both evenings. It was estimated that at least 3,000 people were in attendance.     With their opening meet postponed due to the weather, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn golfers had to wait two days to begin competing. The Hawks took on War Eagle Conference opponent Akron-Westfield on April 4 at Sanborn Golf and Country Club. With only two varsity girls' players, H-M-S did not compile a team score.     • March 31, 1949 Members of the Hartley Girl Scout Troop entertained their parents. The girls presented three playlets and several musical selections. Each member of the troop participated.     Expanding the preschool program at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Community School from half days to a full day schedule will not happen next fall. Principal Ashley Benz told the school board last month that H-M-S was considering extending Little Hawks Preschool's schedule to four full days per week. She said that additional learning opportunities could be offered with an extended schedule.     One applicant was all that was needed to fill the position of Royal City Clerk. The city council on March 13 approved hiring Jill Hickey to take over the duties of city clerk on Aug. 1. She will be paid $20 per hour, with a work week of 12-14 hours. No health insurance benefits are being offered to Hickey, who will also clean the Community Building.     The master contract for the 2024-25 school year was approved by the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn School Board on Feb. 19, but terms of the agreement could be impacted by legislation under consideration in Des Moines.
