As a result of action by the school board on Monday, the cost of student lunches during December and January will be assumed by the Nutrition Fund. The electrical utility operator in Royal wants more time to comply with terms of an agreement with the city. Torin Erickson, customer operations supervisor with Alliant Energy, said during the Nov. 8 city council meeting that Alliant Energy wants to extend the completion deadline for the underground electrical project. The City of Royal and the fire department will each pay half the cost of a tank to supply diesel fuel for both entities. Maintenance Superintendent Sherman Nielsen said at the Nov. 8 city council meeting that the Royal-Clay-Lincoln Fire Board is “on board” with sharing the cost of the fuel tank and pump. Seven players from Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn were named to the 2023 Class A District 1 all-district football teams. Four of the players are repeat selections. Named to the first team from H-M-S are seniors Bradley Van Beek and Ethan Wiersma, along with junior James Gellerman. As far as the Royal City Council is concerned, language in place designating Iowa Lakes Regional Water (ILRW) as the operator of the community’s water utility is all that is needed to govern the relationship. After a three-year run in which it compiled a record of 23-9, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's football program suffered a drop-off in 2023.
