  • Getting ready for the big finish

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Oct 13, 2022

The cross country meet hosted by George-Little Rock/Central Lyon has traditionally been a "tune up" for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn runners before the War Eagle Conference and state qualifying meets later in the month. H-M-S competed in the G-LR/CL meet on Oct. 6 at Otter Valley Country Club, with the boys' team finishing fifth and the girls coming in seventh. In the girls' race, Lexi Croatt placed 36th, 25:26; and Gracie Knobloch finished 40th, 26:07. The other H-M-S runners were Kamryn Ebel, 45th,...

  • Same place, different results

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Oct 13, 2022

After squeaking out close wins in the first two sets, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn completed a sweep of Harris-Lake Park in War Eagle Conference volleyball play. The Hawks won the Oct. 4 match at Lake Park by scores of 25-22, 25-22 and 25-11. After trailing early in the opening sets, H-M-S built what appeared to be comfortable leads. But the Wolves rallied to tie the score at 22-22 in the first set and narrowed the gap to two late in the second. The Hawks dominated the final set to wrap up the...

  • Everybody gets into the act

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Oct 13, 2022

Contributions in all three phases added up to a dominating performance by Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn in a 55-20 win at Hinton. H-M-S kept its Class A District 1 record unblemished at 5-0 with the win on Oct. 7. Those contributions were especially evident during the second quarter when both teams combined to score 56 points. Hinton struck first on a 54-yard run by Beau DeRocher, erasing H-M-S's early lead which had come on a 34-yard run by Kooper Ebel. The Hawks immediately regained the lead thanks...

    • Oct. 9, 1947 The Hartley library, which had been housed in the Legion Hall since its inauguration, was moving into new quarters in the old post office building. For some time the room in the Legion Hall had been inadequate for the growing needs of the library. The American Legion decided that a file would be made of the blood types of all World War II veterans. The file would be placed at the disposal of local doctors who could call on any Legion member for a transfusion of the particular type needed should the emergency arise. The Moneta H...

  • Living up to their reputation

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Oct 6, 2022

Taking on two rated War Eagle Conference volleyball teams was the challenge for the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn volleyball team last week, and those teams lived up to their reputations with straight-set victories. H-M-S faced Unity Christian [Class 3A No. 7] at Orange City on Sept. 27, losing in straight sets by scores of 13-25, 11-25 and 8-25. The Hawks stayed close early in the first two sets but could not match the Knights' strength. Unity Christian broke out to a quick lead in the final set and t...

  • They're still the team to beat

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Oct 6, 2022

Scoring late in the first half and again to begin the third quarter gave West Hancock a definite edge in a battle of ranked Class A football teams. Those touchdowns gave the Eagles a two-score advantage, which was the final margin of a 31-18 win over Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn on Sept. 30 at Peterson Field. After a scoreless first quarter, H-M-S took the lead on Kooper Ebel's short scoring run. West Hancock answered four minutes later with a 14-yard scoring pass. The Eagles recovered a Hawk fumble...

Competing in their second races of the week, three Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn cross country runners finished in the Top 20 at the South O'Brien meet on Sept. 29. Bryce Dodge led the Hawk boys with a 15th-place finish, running the course at Paullina in a time of 18:31. George Vargas was right behind, finishing 16th with a time of 18:34. Damian Dodge came in next, finishing 40th with a time of 19:53. He was followed by Aiden Bush, 45th, 20:12; and Blaine Finster, 52nd, 20:40. H-M-S finished sixth out...

  • Scoreboard replacement offers other benefits

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Sep 29, 2022

With scoreboards needing replacement, the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Community School is considering options to update them and possibly increase revenue at the same time. An online presentation allowed school board members to hear what options are available through Daktronics. Marketing and Advertising Consultant Jerry Sikkink said that scoreboards can entertain fans, and help fund equipment and consolidate sponsorships. According to discussion, replacing the high school football, baseball and...

  • Disaster assistance is complicated

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Sep 29, 2022

The Royal City Council has wondered for more than two months why Clay County was not included in the governor's disaster proclamation after the July 5 derecho. Now they have their answer. Clay County Emergency Management Coordinator Eric Tigges said during this month's council meeting that three types of disaster assistance are available. A presidential declaration is the most common but eligibility for federal assistance is tied to the amount of public sector and state uninsurable damage. A...

    • Oct. 2, 1947 Mrs. R.W. Hoper left Omaha, Neb. on a special train for Los Angeles, Calif., where she was a delegate to the Supreme P.E.O. Convention. She also planned to visit in the home of her brother, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Fisher and family, at Berkeley, Calif. The organization of the local Future Farmers of America chapter started on Sept. 19. Seventy members were present at the meeting during which officers were elected: Dale Wacker, president; Blaine Hirt, vice president; Duane Philiph, secretary; Howard McCarty, treasurer; Donald S...

  • Scoring in a variety of ways

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Sep 29, 2022

First impressions can be deceiving. Take for example Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's offensive performance during its 51-16 win at Alta-Aurelia last Friday night. Initially it didn't seem that the Hawks had any explosive plays. Even Hawk coach Jay Eilers thought the offense didn't dominate as it had in three previous Class A District 1 wins. "No. 1, [Alta-Aurelia] took the big play away from us. We didn't have those 50, 60, 70 yard runs," he said following the game. "That's a compliment to the style...

  • Left out at the end

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Sep 29, 2022

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn was one of three teams to finish with 1-2 match records in Pool A at the Hawks' annual volleyball tournament on Sept. 24. Since no team had an advantage in head-to-head play, the one that allowed the fewest points would advance to the semifinals. That team was Okoboji, which allowed 135 points in three pool matches compared to H-M-S with 138. South O'Brien allowed 146 points. The Hawks did win a pool match for the first time in three years, defeating South O'Brien in three...

  • Another positive meet

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Sep 29, 2022

Three Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn cross country runners placed in the Top 20 at the H-M-S Invitational. The meet was held Sept. 19 at Sanborn Golf and Country Club. Top finishers for the H-M-S varsity boys were George Vargas and Bryce Dodge. Vargas just missed the Top 10, placing 11th in a time of 19:26. Dodge came in 17th while running the course in 20:32. Also competing were Aiden Bush, 30th, 22:52; Damian Dodge, 39th, 24:39; and Blaine Finster, 41st, 25:39. As a team, H-M-S finished sixth with 124...

  • Royal council delays water tower project decision

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Sep 22, 2022

Rather than accepting a bid for painting and repairing the water tower, the Royal City Council decided to delay a decision so another firm can prepare a proposal for consideration next month. Representatives of Viking Industrial Painting, of Omaha, Neb., were in Royal on Sept. 15 and learned the city was considering proposals for work on the water tower. They surveyed the structure and asked the council for time to conduct a thorough inspection. "I know we came in very late. We realize you were...

  • Changes to H-M-S website on the way

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Sep 22, 2022

The Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Community School's website will become more accessible to district patrons and other users in the coming months. Following a presentation on Monday, school board members agreed to switch from Blackboard, the current website manager, to Apptegy. According to Superintendent Patrick Carlin, there have been issues with Blackboard and the agreement with them is about to expire. "We have been investigating options for a district app and website platform. Apptegy seems to be...

  • Relaxed and smooth

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Sep 22, 2022

Physicality was still Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's primary objective during the 2022 Homecoming football game. But H-M-S also successfully passed the ball to complement a potent rushing attack. That combination led to a 47-point halftime lead and an eventual 66-34 victory Sept. 16 at Peterson Field. Kooper Ebel nearly broke free to score on the first play from scrimmage, but needed just one more snap to reach the end zone. His 27-yard run just 28 seconds into the game gave H-M-S a 6-0 lead. Travis K...

  • Great start, big finish to Homecoming week

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Sep 22, 2022

Homecoming week at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn got off to a rousing start with the volleyball team's 3-0 sweep of visiting South O'Brien on Sept. 12. The Hawks earned their second straight War Eagle Conference win by scores of 25-10, 25-19 and 25-21. "Getting the sweep against South O'Brien was a great way to start Homecoming week," said Hawk coach Cheryl Kroese. "I definitely felt like some of the momentum from the West Sioux win carried over." The Hawks dominated at the net, recording nearly twice...

  • Times continue to fall

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Sep 22, 2022

A pair of Top 20 finishers led the way for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn at the West Lyon Wildcat Invitational on Sept. 12. The cross country meet was held at the Lake Pahoja Recreation Area near Inwood. In the girls' varsity race, Lexi Croatt finished 19th with a time of 25:34. George-Little Rock/Central Lyon won the team title with 29 points and West Lyon was...

  • Sealing the deal

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Sep 15, 2022

The ebb and flow of the first three sets of Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's volleyball match on Sept. 8 indicated a positive trend line for West Sioux. But prospects soon brightened in a big way for the home team, who dominated the final two sets to claim a 3-2 win. H-M-S earned its first War Eagle Conference win by scores of 24-26, 25-22, 23-25, 25-14 and 15-2. The momentum shifted as often in each of the first three sets as the final outcomes. "I felt like our girls were trying to do the right...

  • Shaving minutes off their times

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Sep 15, 2022

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn cross country runners' times and team finishes at the Sibley-Ocheyedan Invitational on Sept. 6 showed vast improvement since the last time they competed on the course at Sibley. Both varsity teams recorded better scores than they did in 2021, and several individuals' times were faster than they previously ran. "Our kids are off to a strong start to the season," said Hawk coach Kirsten Taylor. "Our boys' total team points were almost cut in half in comparison to last...

  • They answered the call

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Sep 15, 2022

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn stayed true to its identity while South O'Brien showed some new wrinkles when the two teams clashed Sept. 9 at Peterson Field in Hartley. The Wolverines had some success throwing the football but it was not enough to offset the Hawks' physical style of play. The result was a 22-6 win that keeps H-M-S atop the Class A District 1 standings. "I thought we played very physical. Our physicality is what we asked our kids to do," said Hawk coach Jay Eilers. "Just proud of our...

  • It was the Hawks' night

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Sep 8, 2022

Big plays. Long drives. A goal line stand. Leads that appeared to be safe. Comebacks that fell short. All of that illustrates the kind of game Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn and Gehlen Catholic played Sept. 2 at LeMars. The Hawks' physical style of football prevailed, but not without a fight. They led by as many as 23 points but needed a late score to hold off Gehlen Catholic for the 50-35 win. "I felt like this was our kids' night," said Hawk coach Jay Eilers. "I was just so proud that they came out...

  • Off to a fresh start

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Sep 8, 2022

A new cross country season began at a new venue, as the Emerald Hills Golf Course was the site for the Okoboji Invitational on Sept. 1. In the past the meet was held at the Woodlyn Hills course east of Milford. Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's boys competed as a varsity team and finished ninth out of 11 schools with at least five runners. The Hawks scored 236 points. George Vargas ran 20:07 to finish 31st overall. Bryce Dodge placed 49th with a time of 21:03; Aiden Bush was 62nd, 22:38; Blaine Finster f...

  • Good tests of progress

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Sep 8, 2022

After playing two close sets with Sibley-Ocheyedan, the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn volleyball team could not sustain that effort in the final two sets. The Hawks lost the match played Aug. 29 at Sibley by scores of 24-26, 27-25, 18-25 and 16-25. The teams traded leads for much of the first set and a series of ties was only broken when S-O scored the final two points. H-M-S was able to return the favor in the next set. "We saw some definite improvement from last week," said Hawk coach Cheryl Kroese....

    • Sept. 4, 1947 Thorne’s Sales and Service was appointed an authorized dealer for Massey-Harris farm implements. Several tractors were on display in their showroom. Early reports on high school registrations at the Hartley Public School indicated enrollment would set an all-time high by passing the 200 mark. There were 199 students registered and at least a half dozen more latecomers were expected. Coaches Harold Church and Tom Dunsmoor had their hands full trying to take care of the large football squad which reported for practice. Sev...
