  • Field position, turnover are 'deal-breakers'

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Oct 19, 2023

Teams whose offenses are predicated on controlling the line of scrimmage battled in the wind and rain Friday night at Peterson Field. Gehlen Catholic would win the fight, scoring a late touchdown in each half to hand Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn a 16-8 loss. H-M-S landed the first blow, scoring on a 60-yard run by James Gellerman. "We were able to run power early," Hawk coach Jay Eilers noted. "I thought James did a great job. I felt like they had somebody there second level, and James just made a...

A letdown in the third set of Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's home volleyball match with MMCRU may have been the turning point in a 3-1 loss. The Royals won the War Eagle Conference match on Oct. 10 by scores of 22-25, 25-18, 27-25, 25-21. Things started well for the Hawks, who used a late rally to win the first set. After playing evenly during the second set, the Royals pulled away to tie the match. The Hawks had an opportunity to regain the momentum in the third set. They went ahead midway into the...

    • Oct. 8, 1948 Mrs. Marie Ramsey arrived home by train from Chicago after a 30-day visit in Germany. Most of the time was spent in Flensberg where she visited her aged mother, her stepfather, brothers and sisters and their families. It had been 34 years since she had left Germany and she felt there was very little change in that area. Cocoa, a German shorthaired pointer owned and handled by Jimmy Hesse, of Hartley, placed first in the novice class and first in the derby class of retrievers during the Isaak Walton field day at Emmetsburg. S...

  • Playing with a lot of joy

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Oct 12, 2023

A philosophy in sports says that competing is not fun unless you win. But Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's football proved that having fun while competing can lead to great results. Hosting Sibley-Ocheyedan on Oct. 6, the Hawks played like a team that was having fun and the reward was a 28-21 win. Hawk coach Jay Eilers said the players established the attitude that led to H-M-S's first win of the 2023 season. "Our kids deserve a lot of this joy. They are awesome. They made great football plays and...

  • Another opportunity lost

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Oct 5, 2023

Prior to the overtime period in Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's game on Sept. 29 at South O'Brien, Hawk coach Jay Eilers challenged his team to not take "no" for an answer and earn the win. The Hawks responded in the extra period, scoring on a 10-yard run by James Gellerman. But the two-point conversion attempt failed and H-M-S had to settle for a six-point lead. South O'Brien tied the score on an eight-yard pass and then untied it with a PAT, giving them the 29-28 victory. "I think we played hard at...

  • Not what it appears

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Sep 28, 2023

The new paint scheme on Royal's water tower looks good from a distance, but close-up inspection indicates there may be problems. The recent paint job came under scrutiny during the city council meeting on Sept. 13. Council members reviewed photos of the structure that was painted in June by Central Tank Coatings. Photos taken by Iowa Lakes Regional Water, the operator of Royal's water utility, indicate several issues due to not enough paint coverage. According to discussion, there are exposed...

  • Playing the game the right way

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Sep 28, 2023

When an athletic team is struggling to win games, any "firsts" are important. Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn achieved some of those during its Homecoming game on Sept. 22. H-M-S scored the initial touchdown, led at half time and led at the end of the third quarter – all for the first time this season. But those accomplishments were not enough as Kingsley-Pierson scored twice in the final period to earn a 34-24 win. The Hawks' early success was due to the style of football they played. "I thought that w...

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Sep 21, 2023

Ominous storm clouds were a portent of what was to come during a Class A District 1 football game between Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn and Akron-Westfield on Sept. 15. Akron-Westfield's offense struck like lightning, scoring on five consecutive first-half possessions. Then threatening weather forced suspension of the game. As conditions in the Akron area did not improve, it was decided to end the contest. As a result, the half time score became the final score: Westerners 36, Hawks 8. The loss was...

  • Something old, something new

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Sep 14, 2023

There was a bit of the familiar as well as the unfamiliar when Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn hosted MMCRU on Sept. 8 in a Class A District 1 football matchup. The offense featured by H-M-S was very familiar. After two weeks of running the split-back veer, the Hawks returned to the single wing – the offense they ran with great success the previous two seasons. What was clearly unfamiliar was the outcome of the game. With their 42-14 win, the Royals broke a six-game losing streak against H-M-S that d...
