The Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn volleyball team's 2023 record of 7-18 might suggest that little progress was made to improve on the previous year's mark of 8-17. But Hawk coach Cheryl Kroese feels the positives outweigh the negatives. "Our win-loss record definitely didn't show what this team was capable of. We have battled since mid-September with injuries so unfortunately that was something we were constantly working through," she said. "In spite of that, I do feel like we showed growth throughout...

As far as the Royal City Council is concerned, language in place designating Iowa Lakes Regional Water (ILRW) as the operator of the community’s water utility is all that is needed to govern the relationship. During the Oct. 11 council meeting, Mayor Josh Toft said his discussions with ILRW CEO Brad Veit and City Attorney Jill Davis confirmed that Royal’s water ordinance does not have to be revised. “We do not have to do anything,” he said. Extensive amendments to Royal’s water ordinance were recommended in September by ILRW’s attorney. A...

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Oct 26, 2023

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's volleyball team had the right attitude entering their regional quarterfinal match against Hinton. Unfortunately for the Hawks, that was not enough to overcome the strengths of the No. 2-rated team in Class 2A. Enjoying advantages in almost every statistical category, the Blackhawks swept the match by scores of 25-5, 25-10, 25-10, on Oct. 18 at Hinton. The first two sets mirrored the scoring of the regular season match between the two teams. Hinton broke out to sizable...

  • Surging at the end

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Oct 26, 2023

As a freshman, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn cross country runner George Vargas came in 99th at the state qualifying meet. It's a sure bet he won't recall that day nearly as much as he will remember his performance at the 2023 qualifying meet on Oct. 19. After running just out of the Top 10 for most of the 5K race, Vargas passed two competitors in the final 400 meters to surge to a ninth-place finish. That result qualifies him to compete at the state meet for the first time. Vargas ran a personal...

H-M-S finished first with 53 team points, out-distancing George-Little Rock/Central Lyon with 70 and Akron-Westfield and MMCRU...

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Oct 19, 2023

Teams whose offenses are predicated on controlling the line of scrimmage battled in the wind and rain Friday night at Peterson Field. "We were able to run power early," Hawk coach Jay Eilers noted. "I thought James did a great job. I felt like they had somebody there second level, and James just made a...

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Oct 12, 2023

A philosophy in sports says that competing is not fun unless you win. But Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's football proved that having fun while competing can lead to great results. Hosting Sibley-Ocheyedan on Oct. 6, the Hawks played like a team that was having fun and the reward was a 28-21 win. Hawk coach Jay Eilers said the players established the attitude that led to H-M-S's first win of the 2023 season. "Our kids deserve a lot of this joy. They are awesome. Prior to the overtime period in Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's game on Sept. 29 at South O'Brien, Hawk coach Jay Eilers challenged his team to not take "no" for an answer and earn the win. The Hawks responded in the extra period, scoring on a 10-yard run by James Gellerman. But the two-point conversion attempt failed and H-M-S had to settle for a six-point lead.
