One area sports-related event in 2022 that will impact Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn is the exit of one member of the War Eagle Conference and its replacement by a school currently in the Siouxland Conference. Unity Christian has competed in the War Eagle Conference for many years. But an enrollment of 228 in grades 9-11 puts it in Class 3A for girls' postseason competition and 2A for boys' tournaments. By comparison, most WEC schools compete in Class 1A. Four previous attempts by Unity Christian to...

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Dec 29, 2022

With Unity Christian leaving the War Eagle Conference at the end of the 2022-23 school year, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn had one last chance to earn its first boys' basketball victory against the Knights. Mission accomplished. Scoring on the first possession, H-M-S built an eight-point lead in the first half and made enough shots and defensive plays down the stretch to earn a 67-64 win. The victory on Dec. 20 at Orange City ended a 13-game losing streak to the Knights. Hawk coach Naet Hoaglund was...

Victory eluded Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn in the first-ever competition of the high school bowling program, but second-place finishes to experienced teams were positive results for the two varsity squads. Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Dec 15, 2022

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn failed to match Sioux Central’s balanced point production during a 67-49 loss at Sioux Rapids on Dec. 5. He also had help from two teammates who added 13 and 12 points, respectively. The Hawks’ only other scoring was eight points by Keevyn Jacobsma, three by Landen Elwood and two by Travis Kamradt. Overall, H-M-S was 21-of-45 in shooting from the field (47 percent), and only 2-of-9 at the foul...

  • Domination on both ends of the floor

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Dec 8, 2022

The margin of victory wasn't a record, but the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn boys' basketball team's 55-point win over Woodbury Central was among the most lopsided in recent memory. The Hawks dominated on both ends of the floor during the 73-18 season-opening win on Dec. 1 at Moville. It was the H-M-S boys' biggest win since an 82-14 defeat of Clay Central/Everly during the 2013-14 season. Offensively, the Hawks made 50 percent of their shots from the field, grabbed 16 rebounds and distributed 21...

  • Stuck on 31

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Dec 8, 2022

With Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn and Woodbury Central finding it difficult to score with any consistency, both girls' basketball teams needed to take advantage of whatever opportunities might develop. Woodbury Central was the team to do that, outscoring the Hawks by four points in the third quarter to claim a 36-31 win on Dec. 1 at Moville. The score was tied 4-4 at the end of the first quarter and the Wildcats managed to take a 13-12 lead into the halftime break. Woodbury Central built a five-point...

  • Comeback gives Okoboji/HMS first dual victory

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Dec 8, 2022

Okoboji/H-M-S needed a strong finish to defeat Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire during a wrestling double dual at Spencer on Dec. 1. GT/RA held a 12-point lead after the 138-pound match but wins by Alex Rouse, Bryce Dodge and Noah Strantz lifted the Pioneers to the 42-36 win. An opening-match pin by Ethan Wiersma and a win by fall by James Gellerman in the final match were not enough to prevent a 50-24 loss to the Tigers. Dodge, Gellerman and Wiersma each split their matches. Jafet Ortiz lost...

  • Early deficit determines the winner

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Dec 1, 2022

Winning the second half was a promising sign for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn in its girls' basketball season-opener. But visiting Sioux Central had all but settled the outcome by halftime to hand the Hawks a 67-43 loss on Nov. 22. H-M-S trailed 7-0 to start the contest and could get no closer than 10-4. Converting scoring opportunities set up by their defense, the Rebels led 24-8 at the end of the first quarter. That trend continued and Sioux Central increased the margin to 44-17 at half time.
