    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Dec 15, 2022

Victory eluded Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn in the first-ever competition of the high school bowling program, but second-place finishes to experienced teams were positive results for the two varsity squads. MMCRU swept the team titles of the Sioux Central Invitational on Dec. 6 at Spencer Bowl. Their boys finished with a combined pin total of 2,798 for two games while H-M-S placed second with 2,408. Other complete teams were Sioux Central (2,026) and Pocahontas Area (1,430). Emmetsburg did not have en...

  • Not enough defensive stops

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Dec 15, 2022

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn failed to match Sioux Central’s balanced point production during a 67-49 loss at Sioux Rapids on Dec. 5. Lance Berends scored 24 points and Kooper Ebel scored 12 to lead H-M-S, but the Rebels’ Jacob Hargens topped them both with 37. He also had help from two teammates who added 13 and 12 points, respectively. The Hawks’ only other scoring was eight points by Keevyn Jacobsma, three by Landen Elwood and two by Travis Kamradt. Overall, H-M-S was 21-of-45 in shooting from the field (47 percent), and only 2-of-9 at the foul...

    • Dec. 11, 1947 The grand opening of the Nissen Drug Store, formerly Potter’s, featured a special get-acquainted offer of a “2 for the price of 1” sale at the soda fountain. Cyril Nissen, formerly of Estherville, was the new proprietor. After much discussion, the American Legion decided to buy 14 acres along Highway 18, just west of the Terpstra property. The land was to be developed as a memorial park for the benefit of the youth of Hartley. Reviving a custom which years before World War II contributed much to the Christmas season, the Har...

  • Domination on both ends of the floor

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Dec 8, 2022

The margin of victory wasn't a record, but the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn boys' basketball team's 55-point win over Woodbury Central was among the most lopsided in recent memory. The Hawks dominated on both ends of the floor during the 73-18 season-opening win on Dec. 1 at Moville. It was the H-M-S boys' biggest win since an 82-14 defeat of Clay Central/Everly during the 2013-14 season. Offensively, the Hawks made 50 percent of their shots from the field, grabbed 16 rebounds and distributed 21...

  • Stuck on 31

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Dec 8, 2022

With Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn and Woodbury Central finding it difficult to score with any consistency, both girls' basketball teams needed to take advantage of whatever opportunities might develop. Woodbury Central was the team to do that, outscoring the Hawks by four points in the third quarter to claim a 36-31 win on Dec. 1 at Moville. The score was tied 4-4 at the end of the first quarter and the Wildcats managed to take a 13-12 lead into the halftime break. Woodbury Central built a five-point...

  • Comeback gives Okoboji/HMS first dual victory

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Dec 8, 2022

Okoboji/H-M-S needed a strong finish to defeat Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire during a wrestling double dual at Spencer on Dec. 1. GT/RA held a 12-point lead after the 138-pound match but wins by Alex Rouse, Bryce Dodge and Noah Strantz lifted the Pioneers to the 42-36 win. An opening-match pin by Ethan Wiersma and a win by fall by James Gellerman in the final match were not enough to prevent a 50-24 loss to the Tigers. Dodge, Gellerman and Wiersma each split their matches. Jafet Ortiz lost...

An 8-5 victory in the championship match gave Pas the title. Dylan Jones finished second in the 126-pound bracket and Noah Strantz was runner-up at 160. Four wrestlers from H-M-S placed, led by James Gellerman who finished third at 182 pounds. He won by fall over Connor Brown, of Sioux Central, in 1:52, and lost by fall in the semifinals to Parker Moritz, of Garner-Hayfield/Ventura, in...

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Dec 1, 2022

Winning the second half was a promising sign for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn in its girls' basketball season-opener. But visiting Sioux Central had all but settled the outcome by halftime to hand the Hawks a 67-43 loss on Nov. 22. H-M-S trailed 7-0 to start the contest and could get no closer than 10-4. Converting scoring opportunities set up by their defense, the Rebels led 24-8 at the end of the first quarter. That trend continued and Sioux Central increased the margin to 44-17 at half time. • RCA offers to assist with project funding

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Nov 24, 2022

It isn’t often that a group attending a city council meeting offers to help finance community projects rather than request funds from the municipality. But that was the case at Royal this month. Allison Goyette, representing Royal Community Action, explained that the group has funds available and plans to have future fundraisers. They are looking for ways to share those resources with the community. “RCA has money but we don’t have projects right now. Keep us in mind when you have concrete ideas,” Goyette said. One idea previously discuss...
