Naet Hoaglund's life journey seems to have come full circle. It began in Hartley where he grew up and returned home to teach and live. Now, he's a head coach at his alma mater. The former Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn elementary school may get a reprieve from the wrecking ball. At their October meeting, board members had agreed to proceed with plans to have the building demolished. The process of finalizing the revised Royal code of ordinances will take a little bit longer to complete. City council members voted to not approve the first reading of the new ordinances on Nov. 10. The main item of concern discussed during the public hearing was weight limits on residential streets. The 2021 football season at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn will rank with some of the best in the history of the program. Records of 8-3 overall and 6-0 in Class A District 1, including two playoff wins, offer some measure the Hawks' accomplishments this fall. The membership of the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn chapter of the National Honor Society grew significantly with the addition of 20 initiates. They were inducted in a ceremony on Nov. 1. Advisor Jim Thomas said that more than 35 students were eligible to be considered for induction. • Nov. 14, 1946 An airplane from Eli, Minn. to Spencer became lost in a snowstorm and had to make a forced landing on the Fred Will farm near Hartley. Mr. Williams, the pilot and only occupant, was unhurt and the plane was not damaged. Work was for the most part completed on the Hartley skating rink at the north end of the municipal park. It seems inevitable that Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn and West Hancock would eventually meet in the Class A football playoffs. The two teams played in the third round of the 2020 postseason at Britt, where West Hancock won, 56-18. During the 2021 regular season, H-M-S and West Hancock were paired again for a non-district matchup in Week 6. The defending Class A champions won that game, 20-6.
