This year it was also an opportunity for students and staff to raise funds to support a foundation created by an H-M-S graduate who is currently battling the disease. Donations collected in the fish tank on Friday totaled $2,440.42. During an assembly that day, event organizer Janet Prins commended students and staff for their...

    • Nov. 6, 1947 The boys from Harrison Township gathered at the May City hall to reorganize the 4-H club. There was a large attendance present. Walter Koostra and Max Robinson were the leaders of the club. Walter Koostra, Jr. was elected president. Work of laying the large concrete base for the new engine at the Hartley light plant was underway. It would take some 60 days before the large slab was completely set so it was doubtful if the new engine would be in operation by Christmas as had been hoped. Adolph R. and Gerald L. Goetsch were a...

  • Coming up with the answers

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Nov 3, 2022

Stymied by Hinton for much of the first half, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn took control in the third quarter to claim a 46-27 win in the second round of the Class A football playoffs. Although H-M-S had won the regular season matchup by 35 points, Hinton only trailed by one at half time of the Oct. 25 postseason game at Peterson Field. "I think the kids knew this was a big game. I think they recognized it," said Hawk coach Jay Eilers. "But they also realized we were playing somebody we had beaten...

  • They put on an extravaganza

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Oct 27, 2022

The word extravaganza is defined as "a lavish or spectacular show or event," which aptly describes the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Indoor Marching Extravaganza. Groups featured on Oct. 18 in the high school gym included the cheer squad; Dance Attack, which presented the hoopla routine that will be performed at state; and the flag corps accompanied by "Shake It Off." The Marching Hawks led off the extravaganza with pep calls and the school song, and closed the evening with the show that was performed...

A surplus ever-normal granary was placed on a 20x20 foot concrete foundation at the rear of the Thorne Sales and Service garage. Plans were to enlarge the foundation and construct a cement block or tile building on the site. With the birth of a son to Mr. and Mrs. Guy Foley, of Hartley, a new partnership was created. • 'We're leaving here with a win'

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Oct 27, 2022

Either by design or necessity, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn and North Union had one player whose performance in almost every phase dominated the action during a Class A playoff game Oct. 21 in Hartley. North Union running back Bryer Prochniak rushed for 335 yards and scored four touchdowns, and passed for 46 yards and a score. Prochniak was second on his team in total tackles, and on special teams he returned four kickoffs and punted once. But H-M-S had an answer in Kooper Ebel. The senior...

  • It was a head-scratcher

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Oct 27, 2022

Statistics can be useful in determining which team was the most successful in an athletic event. But they don't always tell the full story. Key statistics for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn in a Class 2A regional opening round match Oct. 17 at Sibley were every bit as good as Sibley-Ocheyedan in almost every area. But the stat that counts most – scoring – was in the Generals' favor. They won the match, 3-1, by scores of 25-20, 25-20, 24-26 and 25-20. "I was extremely proud of how we came out and bat...

  • Faster times lead to improved scores

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Oct 27, 2022

Year-to-year comparisons of athletic performance are not always a true measure of progress, but scoring for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's cross country teams at the state qualifying meet on Oct. 20 suggests things are trending in the right direction. That is especially true of the H-M-S boys, who lowered their overall score from 434 in 2020 to 294 in 2021, and now to 228. The Hawk girls also put up some fast times. "I truly couldn't have asked for more out of our teams that competed at Holstein. A ma...

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Sep 29, 2022

The Royal City Council has wondered for more than two months why Clay County was not included in the governor's disaster proclamation after the July 5 derecho. Now they have their answer. Clay County Emergency Management Coordinator Eric Tigges said during this month's council meeting that three types of disaster assistance are available. A presidential declaration is the most common but eligibility for federal assistance is tied to the amount of public sector and state uninsurable damage. A...
