The Royal City Council wants to improve the roads that provide access to a major grain storage facility in Clay County. "We've asked for funds to help with...
It wasn't anything like an official game, but Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn and Spirit Lake's football teams put on the pads and helmets for a scrimmage Friday night at Hafer Field in Spirit Lake. The varsity offenses each ran 12 plays against the varsity defenses, followed by 12 plays by the JV offenses against the JV defenses. They repeated that sequence before each varsity offense had three chances to make a first down in a short yardage situation. Game 1 for both teams is Friday night. H-M-S...
The 2022-23 school year at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn will begin next Tuesday and the district is ready to welcome students to their classrooms. Initial indications are that H-M-S will have more students to welcome. Final enrollment will not be determined for some time, but the district is anticipating over 30 newcomers. That trend seems to apply at the high school, where at least 11 new students are enrolled. "We continue to get more students, which is a great thing," Principal Nate Hemiller said...
"It's not apples to apples. It's confusing." That was Royal Mayor Josh Toft's comment during the August city council meeting as he passed out bid sheets for painting and repairing the water tower. As anticipated, three companies did submit bids. However, they were not consistent in terms of the work they proposed to do to the tower. One proposal called for inspecting and painting the tower and 30,000-gallon tank, which is what the council wants to have done. Another bid covered replacing the lad...

The additional cost for H-M-S is $3,500. School Bus Sales stated they are "only passing down the exact amount of the supplemental invoice...

She indicated some language in the document, which was prepared by the school’s attorney, Steve Avery, could not be included on the ballot. According to discussion, the district then asked Ahlers & Cooney, P.C. to prepare an amend...
Royal's elected officials spent a good part of the July council meeting praising volunteers who helped clean up the community following the derecho on July 5. For some softball programs, a 10-15 season record would be a step backward. For Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn it could be a sign of better things to come. With a roster primarily comprised of freshmen and sophomores, H-M-S doubled its victory total from a year ago and had its first double-digit win season since 2017. This year's improvement could lead to greater results in the future. "Overall we had a great season. Going from five wins last year to 10 with a young team is impressive," said Hawk coach...
The 2022 baseball season started on an up note for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn and a 3-2 record in the final five regular season games was a plus. But the Hawks also suffered through a 10-game losing streak and endured an inning that seemed would never end during district play. The combined result was a record of 5-15 overall and 2-8 in the War Eagle Conference. "Looking back, it was definitely a season of ups and downs," said Hawk coach Jeremy Gloden. "We didn't quite reach the marks we had set for...
A seven-run second inning gave Sibley-Ocheyedan all the scoring it needed to hand Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn an 11-2 loss in a Class 2A regional softball quarterfinal game July 6 at Ocheyedan. S-O had answered H-M-S's run in the first inning to take a 2-1 lead. Not much damage was done to the truck and no milk was spilled. Several trucks and a wrecking car from Everly were needed to get the truck back on...
The Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn baseball team may have felt as though they were in a time warp during the opening round of the Class 1A district baseball tournament. In an eerily similar inning to one they had a year ago in district play, the Hawks could not prevent their opponent from putting up a double-digit run total. That set the stage for Bishop Garrigan's 15-3 win July 2 at Algona. The Hawks had the makings of a significant rally of their own in the second inning, when they loaded the bases...
