    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Jul 21, 2022

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn baseball player Jacob Cates was named to the All-War Eagle Conference first team for the 2022 season. The sophomore, who was honorable mention all-conference in 2021, led H-M-S in batting average, hits, double, triples and home runs (tied), and also had the highest fielding percentage (.941) among regulars in the lineup. Two other Hawks were named to the all-conference teams for the first time. Senior Jordan Ortega was named second-team all-conference and junior Trenton...

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Jul 14, 2022

The Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Community School will ask for voter approval to extend the Physical Plant and Equipment Levy (PPEL) for 10 years. A resolution of election approved on Monday calls for the question to be placed on the ballot for a special school election on Tuesday, Sept. 13. The district has until July 29 to submit the ballot question to the O'Brien County Commissioner of Elections. The current levy was approved in September of 2013, when 69 percent of voters supported the measure....

    • July 17, 1947 W.H. Mohr tendered his resignation to the Fairmont Creamery Co., concluding 16 years of service to that firm and its predecessor. His future plans were indefinite. The family of Mohr’s replacement, Jerry Caveneau, would join him from Omaha, Neb. as soon as housing was available. According to word from German sources, the remains of Kenneth Rost, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Rost, were found with his plane near Sur, Hungary. He was reported missing during the war when his plane failed to return from a mission to Germany. One hun...

  • Building process takes positive steps forward

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Jul 14, 2022

For some softball programs, a 10-15 season record would be a step backward. For Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn it could be a sign of better things to come. With a roster primarily comprised of freshmen and sophomores, H-M-S doubled its victory total from a year ago and had its first double-digit win season since 2017. This year's improvement could lead to greater results in the future. "Overall we had a great season. Going from five wins last year to 10 with a young team is impressive," said Hawk coach...

  • A season of ups and downs for H-M-S

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Jul 14, 2022

The 2022 baseball season started on an up note for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn and a 3-2 record in the final five regular season games was a plus. But the Hawks also suffered through a 10-game losing streak and endured an inning that seemed would never end during district play. The combined result was a record of 5-15 overall and 2-8 in the War Eagle Conference. "Looking back, it was definitely a season of ups and downs," said Hawk coach Jeremy Gloden. "We didn't quite reach the marks we had set for... Full story

  • A break in the momentum

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Jul 14, 2022

A seven-run second inning gave Sibley-Ocheyedan all the scoring it needed to hand Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn an 11-2 loss in a Class 2A regional softball quarterfinal game July 6 at Ocheyedan. S-O had answered H-M-S's run in the first inning to take a 2-1 lead. The Generals started things in the second inning with three straight hits, followed by an error, a walk and two hit batters that led to five runs. A pair of infield groundouts built S-O's advantage to 9-1. The Hawks' initial run came when...

    • July 10, 1947 A caravan consisting of four young people and counselors met with the Hartley Methodist Church Youth Fellowship group to help revitalize and strengthen the youth program, and give a clear vision of the Christian responsibility on every phase of life. A truck loaded with milk for the Hartley Creamery ran off the grade north of the bridge across the Ocheyedan River during a thunderstorm. Not much damage was done to the truck and no milk was spilled. Several trucks and a wrecking car from Everly were needed to get the truck back on...

  • Doomed again by a big inning

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Jul 7, 2022

The Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn baseball team may have felt as though they were in a time warp during the opening round of the Class 1A district baseball tournament. In an eerily similar inning to one they had a year ago in district play, the Hawks could not prevent their opponent from putting up a double-digit run total. That set the stage for Bishop Garrigan's 15-3 win July 2 at Algona. The Hawks had the makings of a significant rally of their own in the second inning, when they loaded the bases...

  • Bats come alive against Wolverines, Tigers

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Jul 7, 2022

South O'Brien's first-inning lead was no stumbling block for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's baseball team, which came back to claim a 5-3 win on June 27 in Hartley. Two hits and an error allowed the Wolverines to go ahead 2-0, but H-M-S answered with a pair of runs on singles by Tanner Tesch and Nick Bronstad. Jordan Ortega's two-run double in the second inning and two Wolverine errors helped the Hawks take a 5-2 lead. "I was very happy with the way we responded after a rough top of the first," Hawk...

  • And what a week it was

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Jul 7, 2022

Wins on three consecutive nights helped Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's softball team improve its final regular season record to 10-14, doubling their win total from a year ago. The week could have started differently if H-M-S hadn't answered a challenge by visiting South O'Brien on June 27. The Hawks surrendered a three-run lead in the seventh inning but came up with a big hit in their last at-bat to emerge with the 5-4 win. "It was a great game by both teams," Hawk coach Stephanie Bronstad said. "We...

    • July 3, 1947 A sudden windstorm that reportedly rose to a fury of 85 mph spread destruction as it swept across a path north of Hartley. Hail which accompanied the gale totally destroyed some corn and bean fields, beat others to the ground and broke hundreds of home, barn and school windows in a 10 to 15 mile strip. No damage other than broken tree branches was reported in Hartley. DeYoung’s Ice Cream Store, a popular place especially during hot days, greatly enlarged their ice cream storage space by adding a new 12-section storage cab...

  • A win and the one that got away

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Jun 30, 2022

As had often been the case during a 10-game losing streak, the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn baseball team fell behind early against West Bend-Mallard. But there was one crucial difference in the June 21 contest: the Hawks overcame adversity to claim an 8-5 win in Hartley. West Bend-Mallard took a 4-1 lead with a run in the first inning and three more in the second as a result of timely hits and untimely miscues by the Hawks. "It felt good to get back in the win column," said Hawk coach Jeremy Gloden....

  • It all came together

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Jun 30, 2022

It isn't often that a softball team can be out-hit and still win by seven runs. But that was the scenario in Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's 9-2 victory over George-Little Rock. G-LR had a 5-4 edge in hits during the June 21 contest in Hartley, but H-M-S took advantage of seven walks, two hit batters and errors to end a four-game losing streak. "I wanted the bats to turn on a little more, but overall I'm happy with the win," said Hawk coach Stephanie Bronstad. Gracie Knobloch's lead-off triple in the s...

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn lost twice during the Okoboji softball tournament on June 25 at Milford. Okoboji overcame an early deficit to earn a 15-5 win. The Hawks led 3-1 after one inning but the Pioneers took control with four runs in the third, six runs in the fourth and four runs in the fifth. H-M-S scored twice in the fifth inning. Cadence Klein led H-M-S with a double, a single and two runs batted in; Gracie Knobloch had two hits; Eliza Tewes had one hit and two RBI; and Kinsey Schirmer,...

  • Few changes in fees at H-M-S for 2022-23

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Jun 23, 2022

Costs for most goods and services may be rising, but there will be few increases in fees for the 2022-23 school year at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn. The schedule approved by the board on Monday only calls for increases in activity ticket prices, which are due to changes in gate admissions. Superintendent Patrick Carlin said meal prices will be determined by the state at a later date. The district will charge a fee for school-related credit card transactions to JMC. The $1.50 fee is at the lower end...

  • Royal council pleased with cleanup progress

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Jun 23, 2022

Royal city council members are happy with how local residents are responding to letters asking them to clean up their properties. During discussion on June 8, council members were informed that after a second inspection of properties, only 10 had not completely addressed issues listed in notices they had received. That compares to the more than 50 properties that were identified during the initial survey conducted in April. “That is outstanding,” responded Mayor Josh Toft. According to Council Member Mitch Fahnlander, progress was made at the...

    • June 26, 1947 Six midget mules, the only hitch of its kind in the United States, were in Hartley. According to handler Brownie Beck, the rare animals were gotten together after a long search over many states. Pulling a calliope, the little fellows attracted a large crowd of all ages. In a very appropriate service at the Methodist church, Rev. Stanley Kruschwitz, assisted by Mrs. L.J. Parks and Mrs. Hobart Putnam, presented service folders to the young men and women whose service stars had been on the service flag of the church. The folders b...

  • Tough month continues for H-M-S hardballers

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Jun 23, 2022

The month of June has been a winless one for the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn baseball team, which extended its losing streak to 10 games last week. Remsen St. Mary's, the top-ranked team in Class 1A, took the early lead and never looked back in a 15-0 defeat of H-M-S on June 13 in Hartley. St. Mary's took control with a five-run first inning. They scored four runs in the second and third innings, and added single runs in the next two frames. Losing pitcher Evan Eilers surrendered 13 runs (10 earned)...

  • Working to pull through the slump

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Jun 23, 2022

Runs remained at a premium for the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn softball team, which scored just twice in four games last week, all of which were losses. H-M-S had only two baserunners in an 11-0 home loss to Remsen St. Mary's on June 13. Abby Otto hit a single in the first inning and Eliza Tewes walked in the third to account for the Hawks' limited activity on the base paths. St. Mary's started their scoring with a run in the first inning and added three runs in each of the next three innings. A run...

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Jun 16, 2022

Following more than three years of discussion and two years since the application was submitted, the City of Royal has been awarded a grant to obtain a generator for the sanitary sewer lift station. City Clerk Barb Fletcher informed the city council of the grant award on June 8. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has approved $37,500 in funding. That is divided between $33,750 in federal funds and $3,750 from the state. According to discussion, the grant will be used to obtain and install an emergency generator and related equipment at...

  • Softball team splits 2 games at South O'Brien tourney

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Jun 16, 2022

Improved play by Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn was evident in the results of two games at the South O'Brien softball tournament on June 11. The Hawks lost their first game with Ridge View, 9-5, but there were encouraging signs. "The girls played well and battled hard," Hawk coach Stephanie Bronstad said. "We had a few bobbles and errors that would have kept the game closer." H-M-S matched Ridge View's (2A No. 11) first-inning run in the third inning. Eliza Tewes led off with a single and scored on...

  • Stuck in a funk

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Jun 16, 2022

The issues that challenged Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's baseball team to begin the month continued against three War Eagle Conference opponents last week. In action against Akron-Westfield, the Hawks were limited to two hits and struggled defensively during a 10-0 loss on June 6 at Akron. The Westerners built a 4-0 lead with two runs in the second inning and single scores in the first and fourth innings. Six runs in the fifth ended the game. "Free bases, fielding miscues, mental mistakes and quiet b...

  • Close isn't enough against Westerners

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Jun 16, 2022

Akron-Westfield may have won the battle, but Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn put up quite a fight. Playing on June 6 at Akron, the Westerners (1A No. 13) needed three late runs to preserve a 5-1 victory in what Hawk coach Stephanie Bronstad considered one of the better games H-M-S has played against the perennial War Eagle Conference champions. A two-run single in the second inning gave Akron-Westfield the lead, but H-M-S cut the margin in half in the fourth. Following consecutive walks to Gracie...

  • Late comeback salvages split

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Jun 9, 2022

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn needed a late rally in the softball game to salvage a split with Cherokee on Saturday, June 4. On the softball diamond, H-M-S and Cherokee each scored a run in the first inning. The Braves added two runs in the third and four in the fourth to build a 7-1 lead. The Hawks began the comeback with three runs in the fifth and tied the score with three more in the seventh to force an extra inning. H-M-S scored twice in the eighth and limited Cherokee to one run to escape with...
