  • Code revision nears completion in Royal

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Feb 24, 2022

Approval of the 2022 Royal code of ordinances moved one step closer toward completion as the council approved the second reading on Feb. 9. As has been the case during much of the revision process, the only matter of concern during the public hearing was semi-tractor/trailer parking. Language under consideration prohibits semis from being parked on city streets in the restricted residential area, and only tractors may be parked on private property. “This should help save the streets,” said Mayor Josh Toft. “The way it’s written, it covers the i...

    • Feb. 27, 1947 Firefighting equipment and a large crowd of spectators were drawn to Lage’s D-X station, just east of the Hartley Creamery, by a small fire in a storage building adjacent to the station. Large quantities of smoke billowed from the structure but damage was very minor. The Hartley Chamber of Commerce donated $50 to the Melvin girls’ basketball team to help defray their expenses to the state tournament in Des Moines. President S.J. Johnson, W.R. Wagner, W.H. Hesse and Secretary Ingwer L. Hansen drove to Melvin to make the prese...

  • It was a wild one

    Mike Petersen, Staff Writer & Staff Writer|Feb 24, 2022

With 1.7 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, Trinity Christian had their hottest shooter at the foul line to attempt two shots that would break a 50-50 tie and possibly end Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's season. But neither attempt was good and H-M-S would eventually prevail, 63-55, in two overtimes to win the Class 1A district quarterfinal game on Feb. 14 in Hartley. "We survived a wild one," Hawk coach Naet Hoaglund acknowledged. "It wasn't pretty by any means but I'm proud of how our guys...

  • Generals are commanding in regional quarterfinal

    Mike Petersen, Staff Writer & Staff Writer|Feb 24, 2022

What a difference a change of venue and the stakes involved made when the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn and Sibley-Ocheyedan girls' basketball teams met for the second time. With the exception of the third quarter, H-M-S had stayed right with S-O (2A No. 5) during a 55-45 regular season loss on Feb. 3 in Hartley. But when the Hawks traveled to Sibley on Feb. 15 for the quarterfinal round of the regional tournament, they were dominated from start to finish during a 59-31 season-ending loss. The importan...

  • District semifinal is 'a real grind'

    Mike Petersen, Staff Writer & Staff Writer|Feb 24, 2022

"It's a tough way to end the season." That's how Hawk coach Naet Hoaglund summed up Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's 62-22 loss to Remsen St. Mary's in a Class 1A boys' district semifinal on Feb. 17. H-M-S never led and only forced one tie (2-2). The home team's lead quickly grew to 15-4 late in the first quarter and expanded to 32-13 at the half. "It certainly wasn't the outcome we had worked and prepared for," Hoaglund acknowledged. "Remsen St. Mary's is tough and they play so well together....

He quickly recovered from the injuries. Former Hartley resident, Mrs. William Lemke, was featured in the daily Sioux City papers for her work with the Sunshine League in that city. She was a founder and president of the organiz...

  • They went out and got it

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Feb 17, 2022

Generally speaking, a basketball game ends when the final horn sounds. But the girls' 2A first round regional tournament game Feb. 12 in Hartley between Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn and Alta-Aurelia proved that is not always true. After the eighth lead change of the final quarter, H-M-S went ahead by one on Lydia Harders' rebound put-back with 50 seconds to play. Jasmine Lux added a free throw with 14 seconds on the clock to make the score 49-47. Alta-Aurelia brought the ball up the court and...

The Hawks finished the regular season at 6-15 overall and 1-9 in the conference. Big finishes in both halves helped Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn defeat Harris-Lake Park, 61-45, on Feb. 1 in Hartley. It was the Hawk girls' first win since Jan. 18. The 10-10 deadlock at the end of the first quarter reflected the early seesaw battle. It continued until H-M-S took the lead for good with 5:45 left in the second quarter. The Hawks extended it to 29-20 at the half. "The girls were mentally and physically ready to go. They played the whole game and they played hard. They were on top of...
