• March 6, 1947 Nine persons who were nominated by the contributing organizations were elected to the executive board of the recreational program. Those chosen included Hartley Superintendent John Harold and three of Hartley’s pastors. By-laws drawn up by the steering committee were also approved. Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn is represented on the all-War Eagle Conference boys' basketball teams by juniors Lance Berends and Kooper Ebel. Berends was named to the 2021-22 all-conference first team, the third time he has received that recognition, while Ebel was named to the second team. The third year of the combined Okoboji/HMS wrestling program was a successful one, both in terms of team and individual accomplishments. The Pioneers’ overall dual record in 2021-22 was 9-10. With interest in the sport continuing to rise, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn will establish its own bowling program starting with the 2022-23 season. The decision came after information presented to the school board on Feb. 21 indicates student numbers would justify ending the bowling sharing agreement with Sioux Central. Approval of the 2022 Royal code of ordinances moved one step closer toward completion as the council approved the second reading on Feb. 9. • Feb. 6, 1947 Billy, the 4-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Duane Linder, received some painful burns when a water heater in the yard exploded. Duane had just lighted the heater and Billy was standing near when it exploded. The left side of his face was burned and his hair and brows were singed, but the eye was not injured.
