    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Nov 4, 2021

It seems inevitable that Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn and West Hancock would eventually meet in the Class A football playoffs. The two teams played in the third round of the 2020 postseason at Britt, where West Hancock won, 56-18. During the 2021 regular season, H-M-S and West Hancock were paired again for a non-district matchup in Week 6. The defending Class A champions won that game, 20-6. Now they meet again this Friday, again at Britt, and again with a berth in the playoff semifinals on the line....

  • Strong finish saves the day in regional opener

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Oct 28, 2021

Sioux Central was one win away from advancing to the next round of the 2A regional volleyball tournament, but Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn had other ideas. Coming back from a 2-1 deficit, the Hawks defeated the Rebels, 3-2, on Oct. 18 at Sioux Rapids. A surge midway through the first set gave H-M-S the lead, but Sioux Central's late rally made the 25-23 final score seem closer than it was. "We came out strong," said Hawk coach Cheryl Kroese. "We were passing the ball well and executing well...

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Oct 28, 2021

Boyden-Hull flexed its offensive muscles early and forced Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn to play from behind during a Class 2A regional quarterfinal match on Oct. 20. The Comets (2A No. 4) led in every set of their 25-4, 25-19, 25-11 win at Hull to end H-M-S’s season. The Hawks fell behind by 10 points to start the match and struggled to get into their offense. “Boyden-Hull did what great teams do in the first set and took advantage of our mistakes,” said Hawk coach Cheryl Kroese. H-M-S also trailed in the final two sets but was more compe...

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Oct 21, 2021

Running a 5K race is not for everyone, but for Madison Otto it has been an opportunity for success. The Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn cross country runner placed fifth at the War Eagle Conference meet on Oct. 11. It was the fourth time she placed in the Top 15 of the varsity runners in that meet. Otto acknowledges it feels "really good" to be all-conference again. "The last 400 I kicked it in," she said. "I thought I was seventh but when I finished I was fifth." Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Oct 21, 2021

The 2021 regular season ended just as it started for the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn volleyball team. The Hawks steadily lost ground in each set as they were unable to generate enough points on offense or counteract the net strength of the Westerners, who recorded 34 kills. H-M-S had a...

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Oct 14, 2021

The aftereffects of a tough loss to the No. 1 team in Class A the previous game coupled with a week of Homecoming activities affected Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn early in its football game against Hinton. But the Hawks responded with 49 unanswered points to secure a 61-13 win Oct. 8 at Peterson Field. The victory, coupled with South O'Brien's loss to Akron-Westfield, secured the District 1 title. It is the first outright championship for H-M-S since back-to-back crowns in 1996 and 1997. Hawk coach...

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Oct 7, 2021

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn knew what was coming when West Hancock had the football, but that didn't make it easy to stop them. Class A's No. 1-ranked team rushed for 354 yards on 66 attempts while preventing H-M-S [No. 10] from having any offensive consistency during a 20-6 win last Friday at Britt. Hawk coach Jay Eilers was most disappointed that his players' hard work and effort didn't pay off with a victory. "We came here to win and we didn't quite get it," he said afterward. The Hawks did not...

  • Early leads can't derail Unity Christian

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Oct 7, 2021

Getting an early jump on Unity Christian in two sets gave Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn reason to get excited, but that momentum proved to be short-lived. The Knights (3A No. 10) quickly rebounded to earn convincing 25-10, 25-10, 25-12 wins to complete the War Eagle Conference sweep. The Hawks led 4-1 in the first set and 3-1 in the third, but could not sustain either advantage. Unity Christian pulled away in both sets as H-M-S could not string points together. The Knights, who finished the match with...

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Sep 30, 2021

Iowa Assessment results for 2020-21 indicate that Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn students generally tested at or above state averages. But those scores do not provide a complete picture because of a lapse in testing a year ago due to the coronavirus pandemic. Information presented at the school board meeting on Sept. 20 shows third and fourth graders' proficiency was above state averages for English Language Arts and math, as was that of freshmen and juniors. Sophomores scored higher than state...
