The average fan may not pay attention to team or individual rankings for high school cross country, but northwest Iowa features some of the state's best programs and athletes. That level of talent was on display during Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's cross country invitational on Sept. 20. Three Class 2A girls' teams and a handful of individuals ranked by the Iowa Track Coaches Association dominated the field during the meet held at Sanborn Golf and Country Club. Sibley-Ocheyedan (No. 9), Cherokee (No....

According to discussion, the Sanborn course offers free memberships and access to the driving range for all high school golfers....

Leese’s office that drivers were disobeying the speed laws, especially in the vicinity of the schoolhouse, were failing to stop at stop signs and were driving with cut-outs open. The mayor warned that if necessary, a patrolman would be brought in to patrol the streets and those violators apprehended would be fined heavily. Rev. G.E. Scheider, pastor of the Hartley and Everly Methodist churches for four years, was transferred to the Galva-Silver Creek charge. Rev. S.A. Kruschwitz was...
Contributions in all three phases provided Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn with the winning formula in a 66-14 win over MMCRU. In addition to eight offensive touchdowns, the Hawks scored on an interception return and used a long punt return to set up a score during Friday night's game at Marcus. Hawk coach Jay Eilers pointed to preparation and mindset as keys to H-M-S remaining undefeated in Class A District 1. "It was the week of practice. It was the process to get to the game," Eilers noted. "We...

The Royal city council discussed ways to finance an upcoming celebration and the purchase of a warning siren during its meeting on Sept. 8. Royal’s 125th anniversary will be celebrated in 2025, so council members feel it is time to start planning for it. One concern is who will lead the effort. “My biggest fear is we won’t have someone to chair it,” said Council Member Jeff Van Westen. He is also concerned that no one will step forward to collect information about Royal’s history, especially since the centennial celebration in 2000. The counc...

Wins in intra-county football battles with South O'Brien have been limited in the past decade, so Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn had plenty to celebrate after a 26-0 triumph at Paullina. The victory over the Wolverines was just the second for H-M-S since taking three straight from 2008-10, including two shutout wins. Hawk coach Jay Eilers anticipated Friday night's game would be a ball-control battle and it was. He was pleased with the outcome. "Our offense was outstanding. I thought we controlled the b...
After not having won a set in six previous matches, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn enjoyed a small taste of success during a 3-1 loss to West Sioux on Sept. 9. The Hawks dropped the first two sets to the Falcons (13-25, 15-25) in the match at Hawarden, but fought back in the third to squeak out a 26-24 win. H-M-S could not sustain the momentum, however, and West Sioux was able to clinch the match with a 25-14 win in the final set. Unlike their loss earlier in the week at Trinity Christian, the Hawks...
After a 12-day layoff from competition, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's cross country runners improved their times during the Sibley-Ocheyedan Invitational on Sept. 7. The competition at S-O also increased, both in quality and in quantity. There were approximately 100 runners in both varsity races, several of whom are rated among the best in the...

Leonard Zahn, of Hartley, was named chairman of the 1947 Farm Bureau resolutions committee for O’Brien County. The committee was to seek comments from members and present a set of resolutions for discussion and adoption at the count...
Friday night's game between Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn and Gehlen Catholic appeared to be one of those where the last team with the football would win. But the Hawks' rushing attack took over in the second half to secure a 44-33 win at Peterson Field. The first quarter belonged to H-M-S, which scored twice to build a 16-0 lead. Connor Dodd's touchdown came on a 10-yard run and Mason Brinkman reached the end zone on a 13-yard reverse. Kooper Ebel ran both conversions. Gehlen Catholic answered with...

H-M-S scored two points early in the first set, but only managed two more the rest of the way. The Hawks generated more points in the second set but were unable to keep pace with Gehlen...
• Sept. 5, 1946 The local school was fairly bursting at the seams with an increased enrollment in practically every grade. That number represented an increase of about 10 percent over the previous year. Hartley’s deluxe bowling alley opened to mark the inauguration of the 1946-47 season. Mr. Peters, proprietor, announced that already more than enough teams had signed up to fill all the time all...
With both teams ranked in the Top 10 by media outlets, the football season-opener between West Sioux (1A No. 2) and Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn (A No. 9) Friday night at Peterson Field was expected to be a battle. For 18 minutes, the game lived up to the hype. The score was tied in the second quarter but West Sioux started to pull away and eventually earned a 73-21 win. While the warm and muggy conditions took their toll on his players, Hawk coach Jay Eilers accepted responsibility for the result....
Comparing results from one season to the next is not always a fair way to gauge athletic performance, but times and finishes for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's cross country runners at the 2021 Deb Hankens Invitational indicate improvement compared to those of a year ago. Veterans and newcomers took advantage of less-stressful weather conditions, as the temperature during the Aug. 26 meet at the Cherokee Country Club was moderate compared to the mid-90s during the 2020 opener. Senior Madison Otto ran...
The 2021 volleyball season got off to a winless start for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn at a tournament hosted by West Lyon on Aug. 24. They were competitive in the second sets against the Westerners and Falcons, but could not get over the hump in 21-17 losses. West Lyon swept H-M-S in the final match by scores of 21-5, 21-10....
A change in buildings to start the new year is not all that's different at the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Middle School. To increase instructional minutes, OREO time is no longer on the schedule. The 15-minute homeroom period had been used to create positive relationships, work on social skills, and monitor and help with students' academic progress. According to Principal Corey Ramsey, the change both increases instructional time and reduces unstructured time. Seventh and eighth graders will also...

As he settles into his new duties as a coach, Eilers sees his role as an instructional interventionist at H-M-S Elementary as an opportunity to help students build a solid foundation for the future. "I was the behavior kid in school,...

Language to be included in Royal’s updated code of ordinances was considered by the city council on Aug. 11. The issue of semi parking in residential areas was discussed with Clay County Sheriff Chris Raveling. The sheriff’s office recently responded to concerns related to semi parking. Raveling said they were “isolated instances” and the owners said they were unaware of the 30-minute time limit currently in force. Raveling provided the council with the truck ordinance that was adopted by the City of Webb. That language was adopted due to dama...
