He was coming to Hartley highly recommended from Oakland, Iowa, where he had been superintendent for six years. He previously was the principal at Oakland for three years. The Willow Creek course at LeMars proved to be the toughest foe for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn in a War Eagle Conference golf meet with Gehlen Catholic on May 4. Track and field athletes and golfers from Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn are entering a busy stretch of postseason competition. His wife would also be on the faculty as a grade teacher. One of the most beautiful ceremonies ever held in Hartley occurred in the Masonic Hall, when the Order of the Rainbow for girls was instituted and 35 girls were initiated. Like their female counterparts, the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn boys' golfers found themselves in an unusual tie with MMCRU when their War Eagle Conference meet ended. Both teams finished play last Friday at Marcus with identical 180 team scores. But unlike the H-M-S girls, the boys didn't find the tiebreaker to be as friendly. Refunding of previously-issued bonds for the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn facilities project was authorized during the school board meeting on April 19. School Infrastructure Sales, Services and Use Tax Revenue Bonds sold in 2019 will be refunded by the new issue.
