  • Several projects being completed in Royal

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Dec 24, 2020

Above-normal temperatures have permitted several maintenance projects by the City of Royal to either be completed or still done this winter. With no snow to plow, city employees Sherman Nielsen and Lance Kruse have tackled tree trimming and removal at the site of a proposed street near the Great Hall of Royal. With trees removed there as well as at Memorial Park, stumps remain and Nielsen suggested they be taken out while the ground is dry and frozen. “Stumps from those we cut last winter weren’t done in the summer,” Nielsen explained. “One...

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Dec 24, 2020

Remsen St. Mary's was not in a giving mood during their visit to Hartley on Dec. 18, as they swept Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn in a War Eagle Conference basketball doubleheader. • Not enough offense to get in the win column

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Dec 24, 2020

If the offense can do a better job of complementing the defense, the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn girls' basketball team would be in position to win some close games. Case in point: the Hawks scored what was then a season-high 45 points against Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire on Dec. 14, but that wasn't enough. The Titans overcame the Hawks' fourth-quarter lead to escape with a 47-45 win in Hartley. Hawk coach Lester Tessum said the girls are playing better defensively, but now they have to...

Compared to the opener, the Hawks cut their turnovers in half and shot well (88.3 percent) at the free throw line against visiting Gehlen Catholic. H-M-S also had plenty of looks at the basket, taking 60 shots from the floor. But they made just 25 percent of those attempts while Gehlen Catholic made 44 percent of their 66 field goal tries. That disparity resulted in...

    • Dec. 6, 1945 The same road grading outfit that leveled the school athletic field also leveled the grounds for the Hartley park. Although it was too late in the year for any further work to be done on the park, it was feasible and hoped that at least a skating rink would be laid out. The board voted last spring to waive the requirement for the Class of 2020. Despite efforts by...

Ricke asked the city council earlier this month for cooperation in getting information about the city and addresses of new residents. Ricke and her husband, Matt, purchased the former St. Louis Catholic Church property two years ago and renovated...

Plans were completed for taking a religious census of all residents of Hartley Township. Committees to make the canvass were selected from the membe...
