    Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds last week extended a disaster proclamation for O'Brien County and four others due to the ongoing threat of bird flu. Other counties included in the extension were Palo Alto, Sac, Sioux and Worth. Bird flu was confirmed in a commercial laying flock in O'Brien County on Dec. 14, which was the eighth detection of the virus in Iowa of 2024.     Audit report released on H-M-S school district Nolte, Cornman & Johnson P.C. has released an audit report on the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Community School District in Hartley. District revenues totaled $13,617,207 for the year ended June 30, 2023, a 6.18 percent increase from the prior year. Expenses for district operations for the year totaled $10,609,884, a 2.62 percent decrease from the prior year.     The Hartley Community Center hosted its annual New Year's Eve bash on Dec. 31 with a meal and trivia contest.     A slow start led to a loss in the opening game of 2025 for the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn girls' basketball team. The 62-51 loss to Unity Christian on Jan. 2 at Orange City ended the Hawks' four-game winning streak. H-M-S fell behind 15-2 to open the game and trailed 25-11 at the end of the first quarter.     The winter crud hit our family hard over the holidays. If one person wasn’t sick, it was the other. Christmas gatherings were postponed and others skipped, but I’m hopeful there’s light at the end of the tunnel. Our Christmas Eve celebration with my family was postponed due to my mom’s illness.
