    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Jan 11, 2024

The national spotlight will blind the Hawkeye State Jan. 15 when Republicans select their top choice for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination during the Iowa Caucuses. The highly-anticipated event will cap more than a year of campaigning. O'Brien County GOP Central Committee Chair Denny Werkmeister is looking forward to the big event and anticipated great attendance. "I'm predicting a big crowd," he said. "If things turn out the way they usually do every four years, there should be a lot of...

  • Begrudgingly, the wait is over

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Jan 11, 2024

The moment northwest Iowa residents have been dreading finally arrived Monday. A winter storm delivered the area's first significant snow accumulation of the season. The weather cancelled classes and other events Monday and Tuesday, which marked the first snow-related shutterings of the current school year. Pictured above and below, Hartley residents dig out Tuesday morning. The National Weather Service in Sioux Falls reported totals ranging between 4-8" in O'Brien and Clay c...

  • Checking in for the New Year

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Jan 11, 2024

A familiar slate of business greeted the Hartley City Council on Monday during its first meeting of 2024. Annual reports and appointments topped the short agenda. Up first were library board members Carolyn Rubsam and Kathy Wacker, who reported 8,761 books and 1,569 movies were checked out last year. The duo also noted the director and adult programming director positions have been filled. Next up was ambulance team member Darla Meyer, who reported the team responded to 289 calls in 2023. That...

Kevin Virgil, a former Army Ranger and CIA operations officer, announced last week that he is running for Iowa's Fourth Congressional District as a Republican. Virgil, who grew up near Sutherland and graduated from South O'Brien High School, said his campaign was founded on the principles of true conservatism and emphasized Iowa's need for a "representative who will fervently defend these values in Washington." The Fourth District is currently represented by Rep. Randy Feenstra (R-Hull), who...

  • S-N Editorial

    Sentinel-News Staff|Jan 11, 2024

Far too often are we reminded of the horrors of gun violence in America. It seems like mass shootings command headlines weekly, and if not that frequent, at least monthly. Last week, it hit home. A gunman entered Perry High School on Jan. 4 before classes started wielding a shotgun and handgun. He opened fire, killing 11-year-old Ahmir Jolliff and wounding seven others, including Principal Dan Marburger. The high school student identified as the shooter also killed himself. Prior to the Perry incident, Iowa had been mostly spared from mass...

  • The Writer's Pen

    Roger Brockshus|Jan 11, 2024

Christmas is over for another year, but the memories still remain. This year, for example, it rained on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. I don’t recall that ever happening, though my memory isn’t that great anymore. The grandkids wanted to go sledding, but there wasn’t any snow. I know I’ll remember this rainy Christmas for a long time, but in years to come if someone asks me what year it occurred, I’ll be stumped. That’s just the way my life goes. One of my Christmas memories from an unknown...

  • Letters: 'A threat to our democracy'

    Jan 11, 2024

To the editor: Trump’s rhetoric and the MAGA Republicans are a threat to our democracy. I have been reading and studying information regarding Hitler and the Nazis during the 1930’s and 1940’s leading up to, and including, WWII. There were those in government and across the nation that supported Hitler. We came close to losing our democracy and becoming an authoritarian country. Hitler had spies in the government and spread propaganda using members of Congress to spread their lies. There were those in government that were on Hitler’s payroll...

  • Letters: Counties are duty-bound to pass CO2 ordinances

    Jan 11, 2024

To the editor: As 2023 ended, CO2 pipelines topped the list of newsworthy items in Iowa. This is not surprising as more than 30 counties are the footprint of Summit Carbon Solutions’ proposed CO2 pipeline. Heading into 2024, county boards bear a heavy responsibility as they deal with ordinances while the state awaits the IUB’s decision on Summit’s permit application. Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS) is not new and CO2 pipelines have been used by oil companies for over 30 years to do Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR), a process that renew...

  • Feenstra: Securing our border and protecting our families

    Rep. Randy Feenstra|Jan 11, 2024

Last December, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reported that more than 302,000 illegal immigrants were apprehended at our southern border, the highest number of crossings ever recorded in a single month in American history. This figure also comes on the heels of a CBP report confirming that more than 785,000 illegal immigrants were encountered at our border since last October alone. The numbers don’t lie. Our border is wide open thanks to President Biden’s ridiculous policies that enc...

This collaborative effort brought together a dedicated group of community members, volunteers and environmental enthusiasts to address the specific conservation needs within the watershed. Among the volunteers were Iowa DNR staff, members of The Nature Conservancy and Tom Konz and Dan Verrips, O'Brien County Conservation...

  • A good start to the New Year

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Jan 11, 2024

A good start at the beginning of the game and scoring runs in the second half pushed Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn past Unity Christian, 40-35. The non-conference game was played Jan. 4 in Hartley. The Hawks scored five unanswered points in the opening 3-1/2 minutes and led 7-4 after one quarter. A five-point advantage early in the second quarter melted as the Knights rallied to take a 12-11 lead. The teams traded leads for the next four minutes and the first half ended with Unity Christian on top,...

  • It wouldn't last

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Jan 11, 2024

The scenario for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn in its first boys' basketball game after the holiday break was similar to that of the game just before Christmas – a good start for the Hawks followed by the opposing team taking control of the contest. Playing at Harris-Lake Park on Jan. 5, the Hawks led for most of the first quarter. But they would give up the lead and then fall farther behind as the game progressed. The outcome would be a 63-25 loss. H-M-S led 10-4 in the early stages of the game a...
