    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Jan 30, 2025

One of Iowans' biggest gripes served as the main dish last Saturday during the first Eggs & Issues forum of 2025. Local legislators agreed that high property taxes were the top complaint from voters over the past year. Framing it as a local issue, they were unsure if state-level intervention could ease the burden on the tax-paying public. "This is not our pig; this is not our farm," said Rep. Megan Jones (R-Sioux Rapids). "But when people come to us with a problem, we try to fix it." The trio...

  • Pedley's Ponderings

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Jan 30, 2025

I feel like I have a great memory. My job requires it, and aside from that, it just always seems to hold up – ask my friends who frequently challenge it; ask my wife who frequently denies it. It failed me last Thursday, though, and I’m still infuriated. Each year I’m required to log a six-hour round trip journey to Rochester, Minn., for an annual checkup at the Mayo Clinic. Long story short, I’m fine. Jan. 23 was the date this year. A 4:45 a.m. alarm shook me from my slumber, as a 9:30 a.m. blood draw appointment required me to get on the road...

  • Toft's Thoughts

    Iesha Toft, S-N Contributor|Jan 30, 2025

Her flowers, all yellow, put their face to The Son, Wrapped in the warmth of abundant, everlasting love. They bask in the delight that He freely gave, Knowing that her dues have already been paid. Her flowers need not water, such needs have all been met, She is seated at His table at which her place was already set. The yellow now shines brighter on her richest bouquet, Heaven, what she longed for, is now where she spends her days. We hold dear each moment, each cherished memory, Praying that...

    Sen. Chuck Grassley|Jan 30, 2025

Q: What’s your take on the first week of the new Trump administration? A: On January 20, President Trump was sworn into office, becoming only the second U.S. president to serve non-consecutive terms. With his historic comeback victory, voters delivered a clear mandate to the White House and Congress. President Trump led on a commonsense agenda to restore law and order, secure our borders and fix the damage the Biden administration did to the economy through inflationary spending. In addition, th...

  • Remarks From the Reverend

Author’s Note: This is the twelfth in a series of devotionals from Psalm 146 “The LORD...relieves the fatherless and widow...” – Psalm 146:9b This month we go back to our look at Psalm 146, as we consider the reasons that we are to put our trust and hope in the Lord God of Jacob. In this second part of verse 9 the eighth reason is given to reassure our hearts that the Lord God of Jacob is the only one worthy to put our trust and hope in, and not in ourselves, and any other person or object. We a...

  • Author visits CC/E Elementary students

    Iesha Toft, S-N Contributor|Jan 30, 2025

Recently, Clay Central/Everly Elementary had the honor of hosting author and former Storm Lake teacher Deb Mortensen. Mortensen gave the students a behind-the-scenes look into how a book comes to life. A lot of work is done by publishers, editors, authors and illustrators before a book hits the shelf. Her story "NOT ME!" was written based on her time as a kindergarten teacher and the many times that students would try to deflect blame from themselves onto a seemingly invisible instigator....
