The new owner of Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's old elementary school is bubbling with excitement about the building's potential. Michael Reese, of Hestia Investments, says that though the building remains empty, he thinks it will become "a crown jewel for Hartley and O'Brien County." Reese and Hestia winterized the facility and patched the west roof after buying the building for $100 from the H-M-S Community School District in early December. Additional renovations will ramp up in the months ahead. "...

The Cherokee Republican, who represents O'Brien County in House District 3, said Friday in Sheldon that the mood among lawmakers regarding eminent domain law was tepid. He didn't expect any movement on the matter this session, but said the issue could be discussed in some form during the coming weeks. Eminent domain has been a hot topic in rural Iowa over...

Every now and then, I’m truly surprised by the World of Sports. The Bengals are in the Super Bowl. Tom Brady retired. The Cubs actually won the World Series. Unfortunately, none of that amusement is ever extended to the Iowa Hawkeyes men’s basketball team. They always underperform and fail to impress, which has once again been the standard this year. My beloved Hawks are currently in a tie for ninth place in the Big 10 standings at 4-6 in the conference and 14-7 overall. With a crushing double-overtime loss at Penn State on Monday night, the...
To the editor: Driving past a certain cattle feeding operation 1.6 miles west of Moneta at 11:30 p.m. can be so hazardous to one’s health, if a driver is too inattentive or speeding much too fast. However, the most danger happens at night when visibility is at a minimum perhaps due to fog. Early in the morning of Wednesday, Jan. 13, my aging wife unexpectedly lost her balance and fell hard onto a hardwood floor near our dining room table. Letting out a scream, she was in pain, crying uncontrollably sitting on the floor. Ugly looking bruises a...

• Feb. 6, 1947 Snow which reached blizzard proportions all but halted transportation in northwest Iowa. The local school was closed for two days. After reopening, the wind whipped up new drifts and caused the biggest share of rural students to be marooned in town as the school buses were unable to return the pupils home. They were housed by local residents. A legislative committee comprised of W.A. Hamilton, Harry Ketelsen, Carl Rahn and the directors of the Hartley Chamber of Commerce planned to meet with Mr. Hudson, of the National Chamber o...
