"I am looking forward to finding a career path throughout the year," she said. "I hope to touch areas I am not familiar with and get a well-rounded experience....

  • The Writer's Pen

    Roger Brockshus|Feb 4, 2021

We live in an age of digital cameras and smart phones. It has become easier to record history, both with pictures and videos. Gone are the days of clipping articles from the newspaper, photo albums sitting on the coffee table and carrying snapshots in your wallet. I may be a bit nostalgic, but I believe we lose something in today’s electronic world. My great-grandparents all died before I was born. The only thing I know about them are names, dates and residences that are available on public r...

  • Over Morning Coffee

    Bonnie Ewoldt, S-N Contributor|Feb 4, 2021

On Jan. 20, within hours of entering the Oval Office, President Biden signed an executive order halting further development of the Keystone XL pipeline. In doing so, he set in motion a series of events harmful to our economy and energy independence. He also jeopardized the future of many families and communities in our Western states. The Keystone XL is only the latest in a long list of pipelines met with lawsuits and demonstrations by environmentalists. The Keystone Pipeline (predecessor of...

The pandemic has everyone reassessing what is truly important. The same goes for teachers and faculty faced with instructing students dealing with social and emotional imbalances that can't be ignored. Clay Central/Everly saw the writing on the wall when schools were promptly shuttered last spring. Due to this change in learning and learning environments coupled with the palpable discord within our nation and everyday lives, it has become more important than ever for faculty to understand what...

    Iesha Toft, S-N Contributor|Feb 4, 2021

Editor's note: This piece originally ran in the November 14, 2019 edition of the Sentinel-News. Marilyn Meyer died on Jan. 31, 2021, at the age of 89. Have you ever spoken with someone and a cascade of beautiful memories fills your mind as they speak? I was given strict orders to not fluff up this article, but I find that hard to do when it is in regard to someone I, and so many of us, cherish so much: My first-grade teacher, Mrs. Meyer. **** Born in 1931 at Lord Lister Hospital in Omaha,...

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Feb 4, 2021

Wins against South O'Brien in boys' basketball haven't come often for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn, so when one does you can't blame the Hawks for admiring the result. Fast starts in both halves, balanced scoring and a great team effort all combined to give the Hawks an 80-61 win on Jan. 26 in Hartley. It was their first win against South O'Brien since 2014 and only the second since 2009. "The total effort the kids put forth for the entire game was a thing of beauty," Hawk coach Mark Petersen...

  • Failing to hit the mark

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Feb 4, 2021

The Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn girls' basketball team failed to generate much offense in three losses last week. After struggling to get shots to fall early in the game, H-M-S made a run at South O'Brien in the second half before falling short, 55-44, on Jan. 26 in Hartley. Twenty-two percent field goal shooting hampered the offense, especially early in the game when the Hawks trailed 12-5 after one quarter and by 14 points late in the first half. A 10-0 run in the third quarter pulled H-M-S to...
