  • Old H-M-S Elementary building approaches end of service

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Mar 25, 2021

The end of the former Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn elementary school's usefulness as an educational facility is on the horizon, prompting discussion concerning its future by the board on March 15. Superintendent Patrick Carlin suggested two options for the building, which is housing H-M-S's middle school students while a new facility is under construction at Sanborn. The first is to demolish the building, most of which was built in 1936 along with an addition in 1955. If that were to occur, the...

  • Finding the right spot

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Mar 25, 2021

Planners of Hartley's new pool should know its precise location soon. A land survey of Neebel Park is slated to take place this month to pinpoint the layout of the future pool. It was hoped to take place last week, according to project manager Michael Fisher, but snow cover made that impossible. Once the fieldwork is complete, planning will move forward in earnest. The design team was scheduled to meet with the pool committee Monday evening to present some of the components of the project and...

  • COVID-19 vaccine eligibility to expand in Iowa

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Mar 25, 2021

Every adult Iowan who wants a COVID-19 vaccine will be eligible to receive one starting April 5. Gov. Kim Reynolds made the announcement March 17 during her weekly news conference. The governor noted the White House believes vaccine shipments to Iowa will double from about 100,000 per week to about 200,000 per week soon, which prompted the eligibility expansion. Currently, those age 65 and older, individuals in certain occupations, and people 64 and under with pre-existing medical conditions...

  • Up there, down there

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Mar 25, 2021

Statewide, the state's seven-day rate was up from 4.2 percent to 4.3 percent. Coronavirus-related deaths were unchanged in O'Brien and Clay counties at 58 and 25, respectively. • Pedley's Ponderings

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Mar 25, 2021

Like every other year, my March Madness bracket was shot to pieces on Day 1 of the tournament. I guessed only seven of the first 16 games correctly on Friday, and 10 of 16 on Saturday. My national champion (Illinois) was knocked out on Sunday and right now there are only six teams in my Sweet 16 still playing. I don’t think I’ll be winning anything in my friends’ pool this year. That doesn’t bother me, though. What did bother me was my Iowa Hawkeyes getting knocked out in the Round of 32 once again. The Black and Gold got absolutely boat ra...

  • S-N Editorial

    Sentinel-News Staff|Mar 25, 2021

There was a time when Iowa's election laws shone as a bright beacon of democracy to our peers in other states. Thanks to dubious actions by the state Legislature, the Hawkeye State has fallen far from grace. Gov. Kim Reynolds this month signed legislation cutting the state's early voting period and closing the polls an hour earlier on Election Day. This was by no means a bipartisan agreement, as the law was passed on strict party lines in both the House and Senate. Reynolds, a Republican, happil...

  • Letters: American Rescue Plan is not a blue state bailout

    Mar 25, 2021

To the editor: I found the editorial by Sen. Joni Ernst in the March 11 edition interesting but misleading. The American Rescue Plan supports the following: 1. Extended unemployment payments for those who lost their job because of the pandemic. 2. Increased food aid addressing help for those needing food assistance. 3. School and childcare block grants to be used for improved ventilation, purchase of protective equipment and steps to help schools reopen safely. 4. Speed up distribution and administration of COVID-19 vaccine and testing across t...

  • From Our Files

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Mar 25, 2021

    • March 28, 1946 Little Miss Karen Liedtke, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Otto Liedtke, received one dollar which was a contest prize given by the “Children’s Activity Magazine” for coloring a picture of “Noma Toys.” There were a number of other prizes. Karen was 6 years old. The entire incumbent ticket, which ran unopposed in the Hartley town election, was re-elected. The vote was light as was to be expected and the only opposition of any unified nature was for the office of mayor, where Mike Collins received the credible number of 44 write-in vo...
