Fifty years of service to the fire department have not only left an impression on Roger "Lefty" Ginger, but also on those who know him. That sentiment was clear Sunday afternoon during a special ceremony commemorating Ginger's half-century of service to Everly Fire & Rescue. The longtime volunteer officially hung up his helmet at the conclusion of the service, which was attended by a full house of well-wishers at the Hap Ketelsen Community Center. Ginger addressed the crowd and said he was grate...

The school board on March 30 approved bids for pipe repair, asbestos abatement and air monitoring for plumbing located in tunnels under classrooms on the north side of the Royal building. The project is estimated at around $80,000. “We started to notice the condition of our pipes in the tunnel after a water leak,” Assistant Superintendent Jeff Scharn explained after the mee...

An opportunity was brought to Clay Central/Everly's attention by state Rep. Megan Jones about the company Lettuce Grow giving away their Farmstands to K-12 schools. Jones partnered with CC/E's fifth grade teacher Joan Kimball and the Royal Lions Club to bring the Farmstand to the school via a special grant. This indoor growing station allows hydroponics to go to work in growing indoor plants. The fifth grade class at CC/E has been studying the ever-interesting topic of hydroponics this spring...
Royal Community Action's annual Easter egg hunt found new egg-hiding grounds in the Clay Central/Everly school building on Saturday thanks to overnight snow accumulation. Utilizing the gym, music room, hallways and lunchroom, participants were able to seek eggs indoors away from the cold and damp park area and smaller space of the community center. Despite the last-minute location change, the Easter Bunny still made a special appearance and helped egg hunters of all ages....
The best season in Iowa basketball history came to a heartbreaking end Sunday in Dallas. Hopes of a national title for the Hawkeye women came crashing down at the hands of LSU. The Black and Gold tallied 85 points in the matchup, but it was all for naught – it felt like the Tigers never missed a shot the whole game. LSU’s marksmanship sent Iowa packing with a 17-point loss and enough heartburn to last a lifetime. The unfortunate ending doesn’t take away from Iowa’s storybook season. This team was great, and they proved that during the tournam...
The Iowa Legislature and Gov. Kim Reynolds cannot seem to make up their minds whether they support parental rights or are against Mom and Dad being the decision-makers when it comes to their children’s well-being. Trying to analyze Republican officials’ views on parental rights is challenging. Baseball’s infield fly rule is simpler. In 2021, the Republican majorities in the Iowa House and Iowa Senate passed legislation to prohibit schools from requiring students to wear facial masks in the c...
Traveling across the state, from River to River, I hear directly from working families who are looking for more childcare options and small business owners on a mission to find more employees. Childcare remains a workforce issue in both our metropolitan areas and rural communities, with childcare availability having a direct impact on employers and economic growth. Serving as the Ranking Member of the Senate Small Business Committee, I have the unique opportunity to bring the stories of middle A...
