  • Learning lifelong skills on two wheels

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Apr 11, 2024

Youngsters at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Elementary are learning that you don't need to be outside to enjoy biking. For the past two years, PE teacher Janet Prins has been engaging TK-K students with a unit on bike basics. Children learn how to balance and steer on pedal-free Strider Bikes before the pedals are added towards the end of the unit. "The kids absolutely love these bikes," Prins said. "It doesn't matter if they know how to ride or not, they like being able to use the bikes in the gym."...

  • Despite clouds, locals catch glimpse of eclipse

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Apr 11, 2024

One of Mother Nature's most dazzling feats was dulled Monday by one of her more mundane. Thanks to an overcast sky, the widely-hyped solar eclipse was rendered somewhat invisible depending on your location in northwest Iowa. Those with a completely overcast view noticed a darker sky, but some still caught a glimpse of the phenomenon peaking through the clouds. Elementary students at Clay Central/Everly crowded the school grounds with special glasses to watch the show – or attempted to, at l...

  • Spring rains quenching ground's thirst

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Apr 11, 2024

Pale is a good thing when it comes to the U.S. Drought Monitor's maps, and last week's was delightfully bland for O'Brien County. The map released on April 4 showed O'Brien County as completely drought-free along with Osceola and Plymouth counties. Portions of other northwest Iowa counties were also listed as drought-free, while the remaining land mass was "abnormally dry." The region was the best off in the state as far as precipitation levels go. According to the map, around 20 counties in...

  • The Writer's Pen

    Roger Brockshus|Apr 11, 2024

Recently our writer’s group worked on our own obituaries. It may sound strange, but we determined that some printed obituaries don’t necessarily match the person they’re written about. Who knows you better than you know yourself? It sometimes appears that obituaries are on file to be drawn out of a hat randomly when a person dies. Writing your own would eliminate that. As I thought about my own obituary, some needed facts came quickly to mind: Name, birthdate, parents, siblings, spouse, child...

  • S-N Editorial

    Sentinel-News Staff|Apr 11, 2024

Caitlin Clark’s legendary Hawkeye career will be remembered for decades to come The monumental career of Caitlin Clark came to a close Sunday when Iowa lost to South Carolina in the NCAA championship game. The defeat marked the second-straight year the Hawkeyes fell in the title game, but this one hurt a little bit more. This was the end of the road. Clark’s career is hard to put into words. Her stat line is five miles long and her awards seem too numerous to count. Phenomenal, fantastic, outstanding – no amount of superlatives do her justi...

    • April 14, 1949 Norman Bruegmann, of Hartley, enrolled in the annual competition of the Fisher Body Craftsman’s Guild. He was working on the design and construction of a model automobile in hopes of winning a cash award and a university scholarship. The spring merchandise fair sponsored by the Hartley Chamber of Commerce drew capacity crowds both evenings. It was estimated that at least 3,000 people were in attendance. More than 40 exhibitors arranged displays that brought favorable comment from the many visitors. Luvern Fear, of Everly, who...

  • CC/E students learn life skills

    Iesha Toft, S-N Contributor|Apr 11, 2024

Clay Central/Everly students in grades 2-6 enjoyed a short exploratory class as a large group in March and April. They first interviewed staff at the Spencer YMCA to learn about different types of fitness, and the benefits of them. They then got to try out several different activities at the Y to see which ones they enjoyed. Later, when back at school, small groups of mixed ages worked collaboratively to research one particular topic (such as CrossFit, swimming, biking, etc.) and then they creat...

  • Out on the course

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Apr 11, 2024

With their opening meet postponed due to the weather, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn golfers had to wait two days to begin competing. The Hawks took on War Eagle Conference opponent Akron-Westfield on April 4 at Sanborn Golf and Country Club. With only two varsity girls' players, H-M-S did not compile a team score. As a result, Akron-Westfield won the dual with their team total of 207. Both H-M-S golfers did achieve individual success. Gracie Knobloch finished in a tie with the Westerners' Allie Swoyer...
