Rich Boardman has a succinct way of describing his new job. "I have my own man cave that I get to invite people over to every night, and that's pretty cool," he said. The Hartley man took over operations of the bar at American Legion Post #288 on April 1. The local watering hole had run dry – the lease of Boardman's predecessor, Mari Howard, expired on Feb. 28, leaving loyal patrons shut out for the entire month of March. But thanks to some good timing and a little coaxing, Boardman decided h...
Josh Paskert knows he's in the right place. Thanks to a passion for meat and a strong entrepreneurial spirit, the rural Everly man recently took a leap of faith by purchasing Nelson Locker in Hartley from Bryan and Jodene Nelson. The longtime business owners were ready to retire, and Paskert saw the opportunity of a lifetime. "It's something I always really enjoyed and wanted to get back into doing," he said. The Hartley City Council made clear on Monday that if more lifeguard applications weren't received soon, the brand new pool would have a hard time opening the doors this summer. The council signed off on increasing the starting lifeguard wage from $8.50 per hour to $10 in an effort to bolster interest. According to discussion, the new rate aligns more closely with other aquatic centers throughout the area. "You've gotta be halfway competitive because you can go to the gas station and get $15...
Hartley officials are hoping it was worth the wait to be picked for a study that will analyze the city's flooding issues. Superintendent of Public Works Jaron Benz on Monday informed the city council that Hartley was approved to be a part of the Silver Jackets Program. City officials applied several months ago, but thought they missed the cut after an extended period of silence from program coordinators. "We thought it had fallen flat and we were exploring other options," Benz said. "This...
An infrastructure improvement project in downtown Hartley yielded quite a hole on Monday. A crew from the city spent the better part of a day removing cement and digging out a sewer main under a portion of First Street Southeast directly south of the Stoplight Lounge. The old clay tile was replaced with completely new plastic pipe to improve the flow of wastewater from the bar and restaurant, which had experienced instances of backup during the past four months. According to Superintendent of...

I have taken a lot of road trips in my life, and some of them were even enjoyable. I was watching TV the other night and saw a movie advertised that starred Chevy Chase. He has some interesting and funny movies out there, and in this one he was planning to take his family on a vacation to Wally World while enjoying some sights along the way. They arrived at Wally World after a number of mishaps, and discovered it was closed for repairs. Boy can I relate to that! Recently my wife, Rita, and I ret...
Last week, Gov. Kim Reynolds announced that the Glenwood Resource Center will close in 2024. GRC is one of two state-run resource centers in Iowa to serve Iowans with intellectual disabilities. In 2019, the U.S. Department of Justice began its investigation of Glenwood Resource Center, and DHS began immediately gathering information, notifying family members, staff and legislators of the DOJ investigation and working to...
The Senate advanced a bill this week to create more options for maternal support programs in Iowa. Sunday was the commencement of the annual Christian observance of Holy Week. Holy Week starts on the Sunday before Easter with Palm Sunday, the celebration of Jesus' arrival into Jerusalem. The waving of palm branches signifies what His followers did upon His entry years ago. Monday is when Jesus cleansed the temple, overturning tables and driving out those who sold and bought there. On Tuesday the chief priests challenged Jesus' authority and Jesus taught in the temple for the last time....
Hello, friends! I thought maybe now was as good a time as any to rebirth my grandma Arlene's locally-famous column, "Bits 'n Pieces." If there is one thing that I know to be true, it's that we have a lot to be thankful for in our little corner of the world. Sharing that joy in some of the simplest ways, from recipes and riddles to jokes and announcements, is something I am excited to offer in this column, just like my grandma did years ago. Except now, she can enjoy reading it instead of writing...
