    Despite cold temps and stiff breeze, the hunt was on in Hartley last Saturday. Children ages 0-10 hit the grounds of Community Memorial Health Center for an egg hunt sponsored by the I.E.F. Club. Participants were split into age groups before heading out en masse during the hunt. Approximately 100 children joined in on the fun.     A vacant lot in Hartley's east industrial park has a new owner. The city council on April 11 unanimously approved an economic development grant for Cory Kunzman and the property, which he purchased for $25,000. The grant is worth $25,000 as well. Kunzman plans to build a 50'x100' shed on the plot. Kunzman, who owns Hawkeye Construction, said work at the site will commence shortly. "It will be a nights and weekend project," he said.     The Everly City Council is hoping that going from two emergency sirens to one will be a good thing. Members on Monday unanimously approved the purchase of a new siren from Blue Valley Public Safety for $25,554.45. With the addition of a battery backup, the total bill will be just under $28,500. The siren will pump out 130 decibels of noise at 100 feet and is capable of covering the whole town. Only one of the city’s two emergency sirens works, and both will be replaced by the new setup.     A plan intended to help high school students map out career and academic goals was approved by the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn school board on Monday. The Individual Career Plan is mandated by the State of Iowa, and requires that students' individual and career academic planning (ICAP) will happen within the framework established by the district plan.     A Royal resident owning a property with different classifications asked the city council on April 13 to designate one of the parcels with a new street address. William Werts explained that his entire property has been designated as 309 4th Avenue, with a shop building on one side for his business and a residence on the other.     Denizens of northwest Iowa were advised to keep their mouths closed and eyes shut tight April 14 due to high-speed winds that ripped through the region. Dirt and dust in the air made the sky hazy throughout the day as steady wind gusts of 50 mph or greater blew through.     It's out with the old and in with new at the Hartley Public Library. Old carpet is being replaced with new vinyl flooring throughout the building. According to library Board Member Dave Vander Broek, the carpet was installed when the library expanded to the east in the 1990s. "That's a long time," he said. "We've got our use out of it."     Joann K. Rozema, 88, of Marshfield, Wis., passed away on Wednesday, April 6, 2022 at Marshfield Medical Center. Joann was born on April 1, 1934 near Hartley, the daughter of Clarence and Mabyl (Bryant) Bobzien. When she was 1-1/2 years old she was raised by Neva and Martin Decker. She went to country school and graduated from Hartley High School in 1952, and worked at Sheridan's Variety Store in Primghar for several years.     • April 24, 1947 A contract for a new engine for the Hartley municipal light plant was awarded to R.V. Leary Co., of Des Moines. The Superior engine was a 1,000 horsepower unit with a 1,000 kilowatt generator. Total price for installation of the unit, including building alterations and accessories, was $114,512. The engine was designed so that if the need arose it could be supercharged to 1,440 horsepower, thus using the full capacity of the generator.     The Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn girls' track and field team had a limited lineup during the Unity Christian Invitational, as several athletes were attending the state FFA convention. But those who were able to compete on April 11 at Orange City recorded solid performances. Jasmine Lux scored 18 of the Hawks' 24 team points.     Victories in their first and final relay races highlighted the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn boys' track team's performance at the Unity Christian Invitational. The meet was held April 11 at Orange City. The Hawks got off to an impressive start in the running events, as Ryan Borden, Ethan Diehm, Kooper Ebel and Connor Dodd won the sprint medley relay.
