The city in 2021 applied for funding through the program, but was rejected. Hartley will receive $25,000 to be used specifically for asbestos removal at the theater. The overall cost to abate the hazardous material has been estimated at $38,000....

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Apr 27, 2023

The potential location of a specially marked crosswalk with flashing lights leading to Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn schools in Hartley was discussed at the April board meeting. He had already obtained a bid for a new Bobcat, the same brand as the city’s current unit. Although he is not familiar with Caterpillar, Nielsen said it should be comparable. According to discussion, advantages of Caterpillar’s bid are a lower price and a better warranty. “It...

  • The Writer's Pen

    Judy Taber|Apr 27, 2023

Prom season is upon us, and I can say with certainty that proms have changed since my high school days. Securing just the right dress is of major importance. I was invited to go with my granddaughter, Emma, when she shopped for her dress. Can I say that I had sticker shock at the price of these beautiful gowns? Long dresses are in vogue again and the choices were shimmering either with sequins or with shiny fabric. They were strapless, one shouldered, backless, very low cut in front, or...

  • Pedley's Ponderings

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Apr 27, 2023

It doesn’t take long to find someone who doesn’t like The Media. Conservatives despise CNN. Liberals hate Fox. All the while, there are a million offshoots placating everyone’s political ideologies and affirming that what they believe is right. Social media fuels the fire, allowing endless opportunities for people to share supercharged takes and baseless lies. There was a brief break in the cycle last week, however. Fox News settled a defamation lawsuit with Dominion Voting Systems worth $787.5 million over lies the network propagated durin...

While still very young the family relocated to the rural Hartley area. Through the years Jim shared many memories of school years as a student at Hartley High School. After graduation in 1962, he attended business school in Omaha, Neb. In the spring of 1964...

    • April 29, 1948 A statewide move to stamp out the menace of flies in Iowa was being translated into action in Hartley. The old parsonage was to be sold and then moved as soon as possible. A visitation day for seventh and eighth graders was sponsored by the Hartley Pub...
