Grass isn't the only thing growing at Hartley's Highway 18 Industrial Park. A public hearing is scheduled to take place May 10 during the city council's meeting regarding the sale of four lots to Wyatt and Monica Glime, of rural Everly. The couple plans to use the property for their trucking business, Backroads Express, LLC. "It's really exciting. HEDC (Hartley Economic Development Corporation) is excited as well," said City Administrator Erica Haack. "We're just happy to see that somebody is...
Local fields were aflutter with activity during the past week as farmers stayed busy planting this year's corn and soybean crop. According to the Iowa Department of Agriculture, Iowa farmers planted more than one-third of the expected soybean crop last week for a total of 43 percent planted, 12 days ahead of normal. More than half of the state's expected corn crop is in the ground as well, with a total of 69 percent planted, nine days ahead of the five-year average. There were also scattered...
Residents of Royal might want to consider changing the town's slogan. Known as "A Prince of a Community," the city is now home to a queen. Gabbi Carpenter on Sunday was picked from a field of six candidates to serve as the new Clay County Fair Queen. She is the first fair royalty in the county since 2019, as the coronavirus pandemic canceled festivities last year. Carpenter, 19, is the daughter of Mel and Rick Brichta. She attended Clay Central/Everly High School prior to its closure in 2019,...
Clay Central/Everly has a money problem, but nobody's complaining. District officials are trying to figure out how to spend approximately $398,000 in Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) funds. The money was allocated by Congress to address the ongoing impact of COVID-19 in America's school districts with the goal of mitigating the effects of the pandemic. Superintendent Kevin Wood on April 28 provided an ESSER update to the school board. He is investigating spending the...
Community Memorial Health Center is ready to cut loose. The Hartley nursing home will celebrate National Nursing Home Week in grand fashion May 9-15. Each day has a special theme, with several activities planned to keep residents busy. The party is extra special this year, as residents and staff have had to follow strict COVID-19 guidelines for the past 14 months. With vaccinations numbers increasing and coronavirus positivity rates plummeting, the CMHC has been allowed to loosen restrictions...

Voters need to respond to 'No Activity' notices Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate is encouraging Iowans who receive a "No Activity" mailing from his office to respond quickly. Registered voters who did not participate in the 2020 general election will soon receive the mailing to confirm their residential address. Those who do not respond will continue to be listed as inactive voters until they participate in an election or update their voter registration. Every March, the Iowa Secretary of...
To the editor: The staff, tenants and residents at Community Memorial Health Center would like to share their appreciation to the citizens of Hartley and surrounding areas for their diligence with COVID-19 protocols and vaccinations. Our county’s low positive rate means we can begin to reopen our doors to visitors. I wish you could witness the reunions; they are tearjerkers. I taught psychology at the college level for 25 years. One of my favorite topics was Viktor Frankl, an Austrian psychologist, philosopher and Holocaust survivor. He is c...
The Jim Crow era was a time of bigotry, segregation and terror for Southern blacks who were subjected to all forms of humiliation and ostracized from society. They were disenfranchised by poll taxes, literacy tests and other unobtainable requirements. It was a dark and shameful period in our history. Today, the radical left is raising the specter of Jim Crow to denounce recent voting reforms made by the Georgia Legislature, claiming the new law will disqualify minority voters. This either shows an appalling lack of knowledge about American hist...
Every year, second graders at Clay Central/Everly embark on a field trip to Omaha's famous Henry Doorly Zoo. Unfortunately in 2020, the class was caught in the undertow of COVID-19 closures and was unable to attend their annual zoo day. Luckily, last Friday the zoo was open this year and classes were able to proceed with field trip plans. CC/E took both the second graders and third graders (last year's second grade class that was unable to go) on the fun field trip adventure. Staff split the...
It has been more than a year since parents have been allowed within the school walls due to COVID-19 regulations and concerns. Last Thursday broke that invisible barrier, allowing families into the Royal gym for Clay Central/Everly's first in-person concert. CC/E Elementary's student body gathered center-gym to sing classic campfire favorites in their Spring Fling concert entitled "A-Camping We Will Go!" The program started with the sixth grade band performing a collection of familiar tunes....

His wife would also be on the faculty as a grade teacher. One of the most beautiful ceremonies ever held in Hartley occurred in the Masonic Hall, when the Order of the Rainbow for girls was instituted and 35 girls were initiated. What is hoped to be a tradition began last Wednesday, when two Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn High School students were presented with the inaugural "Hardest Working Athlete" awards. The announcement of the award and the initial recipients were made during the athletic banquet held in the high school gym. The first two athletes to be recognized with the award are senior Taya Mason and junior Connor Dodd. The plaques they received state the award is given "for an outstanding demonstration of dedication t...
Like their female counterparts, the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn boys' golfers found themselves in an unusual tie with MMCRU when their War Eagle Conference meet ended. Both teams finished play last Friday at Marcus with identical 180 team scores. But unlike the H-M-S girls, the boys didn't find the tiebreaker to be as friendly. Their fifth score was one stroke higher than MMCRU's, giving the hosts the meet win. "We played better, but we had too many penalty strokes," Hawk coach Mark Japenga said....
Individual success in a team environment resulted in favorable outcomes for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn at the Okoboji Relays. As a team, the Hawk boys finished fifth overall with 67 points. But with Class 2A schools such as Spirit Lake (125 points), Sioux Center (124) and Okoboji (117) at the top of the standings of the meet held April 26, Hawk coach Kyle Borchers was not disappointed with the results. "I thought that it was the best meet we had up to date," Borchers said. "We used that meet to see...
After working all season to earn their first win, the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn girls' golf team had to wait a little longer to determine the outcome of their meet with MMCRU on April 30. Both teams finished the dual at Marcus with identical scores of 229. To determine the tiebreaker, the fifth-lowest score of each team was used. The advantage went to the Hawks, which gave them their first win in seven War Eagle Conference meets. "I'm proud of the ladies for getting the win," said Hawk coach...
Jasmine Lux's placing in four events was among the highlights for the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn girls' track and field team at the Okoboji Relays, held on April 26 at Milford. A total of 162 game officials were honored by the Iowa High School Athletic Association for the 2021 edition of its annual officials’ awards program. Through 2019, the IHSAA presented the awards at an annual banquet in Des Moines. The ceremony has not been held the last two years due to COVID-19 considerations, and award-winning officials will receive their honors through mailings from the IHSAA. “We’re always proud of how our officials serve their communities, students and sports, but especially so in this 2020-21 school year as they have...
