Students at Clay Central/Everly Elementary will now be able to participate in more extracurricular activities. The school board on April 28 approved a proposal from Assistant Superintendent Jeff Scharn that will provide a small stipend to teachers who want to start after-school clubs. Hartley American Legion Auxiliary Unit #288 conducted the annual poppy poster contest. Thirty-two entries were submitted by fourth grade students at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Elementary. The number of new COVID-19 infections in O'Brien and Clay counties remained under 10 during the last week. Both counties reported eight new cases apiece between May 4-11. Confirmed infections since the pandemic began tallied 2,147 in O'Brien County, 2,260 in Clay County and 398,496 statewide. Recoveries in that same order were 1,901, 2,076 and 353,080. Violet "Vi" Ostermann, 83, of Mesa, Ariz., passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 6, 2021, in Mesa. Memorial services are pending. Violet was born March 10, 1937, in Ocheyedan, and was the daughter of Edwin and Agnes (Brandt) Krager, where she lived throughout her childhood. Marvean Garlyn Bethke, the daughter of Albert and Gladys (Ostrem) Marco, was born Feb. 28, 1931, in a farmhouse near Sibley. She was baptized and confirmed at the American Lutheran Church at Melvin. Her childhood years were spent in the Melvin community where she received her education. On Feb. 12, 1950, she married Darrell Bethke at the American Lutheran Church at Melvin. Throughout their marriage they made their home in the Hartley community where they farmed for 40 years, moving into Hartley in January 1983. Darrell passed away in 1987....

He was coming to Hartley highly recommended from Oakland, Iowa, where he had been superintendent for six years. He previously was the principal at Oakland for three years. The Willow Creek course at LeMars proved to be the toughest foe for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn in a War Eagle Conference golf meet with Gehlen Catholic on May 4.
