  • Packing it up

    Mike Petersen, Sentinel-News|May 14, 2020

Question: What do you do with school buses that aren't needed to transport students? Answer: Use them as moving vans. Since buses are not being used for their original purpose, they are now holding materials and equipment removed from Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's elementary building until they can be moved into the new facility later this year. Staff had been preparing for the move to the new building, but when onsite learning ended due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the process was accelerated. The...

  • Mapping the dead?

    Nick Pedley, Sentinel-News|May 14, 2020

Could the eternal residents of Hartley’s cemetery find themselves in a searchable database on the World Wide Web? That possibility might become a reality if the city council pursues a proposal presented during Monday’s meeting. Tyler Danielson, of Bolton & Menk, discussed how the firm has the capability of using geographic information system (GIS) mapping technologies to digitally log plot locations at Pleasant View Cemetery. Several other communities have utilized the service, which puts cemetery information into a single searchable dat...

  • O'Brien County coronavirus cases at 17

    Nick Pedley, Sentinel-News|May 14, 2020

Though the number of confirmed cases remains low, O'Brien County health officials are encouraging the public to stay the course in preventing the spread of COVID-19. As of Wednesday morning, O'Brien County had 17 confirmed cases of COVID-19. Neighboring Sioux County had 100 cases while Osceola County had 23, Clay County had nine and Cherokee County had six. The extreme outlier in northwest Iowa remains Woodbury County, which had nearly 2,000 confirmed cases as of Wednesday. The county is home...

  • Seeing green

    Nick Pedley, Sentinel-News|May 14, 2020

With a sense of normalcy hard to come by these days, you can forgive northwest Iowans for finding comfort recently in a very familiar spring scene. Corn began sprouting in some local fields over the past week. With great planting conditions and light precipitation this spring, farmers have been taking advantage by blitzing their fields. According to the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, 91 percent of the state's corn crop had been planted as of Monday with 71 percent of...

  • Fat Chance

Roger Brockshus, The Hartley Writing Group|May 14, 2020

I have never been obese, at least in my own estimation. There have been times, however, when I put on extra weight, often showing up on my stomach and thighs. This usually happens in the winter when I'm less active. Early one spring when I was about 14, it was pointed out to me by my grandfather that I was getting a bit chubby. That bothered me some, so I decided to go on a diet. I would eliminate sweets from my snacks and replace them with fruit. The other meals would be normal, but without...

  • The pains of home improvement

    Nick Pedley, Sentinel-News|May 14, 2020

There used to be this novelty candy in the Nineties called a Wonder Ball. It was a spherical chocolate shell filled with more candy and other surprises like stickers. I never ate one, but I remember the commercial jingle vividly. "Oh I wonder, wonder, hmm, I do...what's in my Wonder Ball? Who knows what surprises a Wonder Ball can hide? Yummy Nestlé chocolate with candy bits inside!" I was reminded of that tune recently after plunging my crowbar into our home office ceiling. The surprise on...

    • May 17, 1945 A very novel and important experiment was being carried out at the Fairmont Creamery Co., where Mr. Mohr and his employees were demonstrating the value of proper egg care from the time the eggs were laid until they arrived at the Hartley plant. Good news came to three Hartley families who received word that Lt. Kermit Hansen, Corp. William J. Byers and Staff Sgt. • Keeping Maverick traditions alive

    Iesha Toft, Sentinel-News Contributor|May 14, 2020

If you've ever driven on M27 in the spring, you have undoubtedly noticed the multi-colored signatures of Maverick seniors gracing intersections outside of Everly and Royal. The tradition has been alive and well for several years with senior class after senior class taking their turn painting the hill and blacktop. This year for the first time since Clay Central and Everly merged, there was no graduating senior class. The dissolution of CC/E's 7-12 grade program led those students to seek...

  • Toft's Thoughts

    Iesha Toft, Sentinel-News Contributor|May 14, 2020

Is this our new normal? Should I just plan on homeschooling Dorothy next year, let my band keep postponing dates, and counsel my sister in postponing her September wedding since Iowa isn't set to peak until August now? I sure hope not. I'm perfectly OK with us learning some major life lessons here. Like how important physical touch and quality time are. How to never let a hello, good morning, hug of love or embrace of kindness go by; how a visit to loved ones is worth every precious second and...
