  • 'Little bit of everything'

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|May 26, 2022

Space at Hartley’s new swimming pool has gotten a little cramped lately. With the end in sight, more construction workers were brought in this week to push things closer to the finish line. Hartley Superintendent of Public Works Jaron Benz said crews have been working on bringing everything up to grade, pouring sidewalks, installing fixtures like sunshades and slides, painting the final coat on the pool basin, and erecting the exterior fence. “It’s a little bit of everything right now,” he said. The big question mark is still the pool’s...

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|May 26, 2022

At one time, the only way anyone could see a high school athletic event was to attend in person, and coaches had to trade films in order to scout opponents. Things have changed since then, and more changes are on the horizon. Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn is considering an opportunity to provide greater video access to viewers and coaches. Athletic Director Mark Petersen told the school board on May 16 that HUDL and Fuller Digital are offering upgrades that include additional cameras and greater...

By signing voluntary easements, the group gave Summit “a nice little stretch of pipeline.” Kruse encourages other impacted landowners to mitigate their concerns and negotiate an easement contract by having a convers...

  • Letters: Dennis Bush for District 5

    May 26, 2022

I am writing in support of Dennis Bush for re-election to the Iowa House of Representatives. His background in farming, as a county supervisor and on a mental health board give him knowledge and experience in key areas of need for Iowa. He also recognizes and has worked on legislation to address important issues Iowa faces: Affordable and available housing and child care, education and parent rights, roads and bridges, water quality, our labor shortage, and mental health care. Late in the session last year when Rep. Bush was in Sheldon for the...

  • Pedley's Ponderings

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|May 26, 2022

There is never a shortage of things to clean in our house. With two kids under 5 and a dog and cat that seemingly replace their coats each week, a thorough cleaning typically lasts six hours. Neither Kaity’s vehicle nor mine receive the same amount of attention as our home, however. Unfortunately a tipping point was reached late last month, and yours truly was responsible for several month’s worth of cleanup. I don’t remember the last time I cleaned out Kaity’s Ford Explorer. It’s the main kid-hauler in our household, and aside from removing...

Happy almost Friday to all! Can you believe we’re already to Memorial Day weekend? Where does the time go? It seems crazy to think that in a few days it will be June. Bring on the warmer temps and summer fun! My babies are ready! Speaking of babies, Clay Central/Everly is on its final week of school! The children are chomping on the bit to start “summer vacation,” and I think it’s safe to say the teachers are equally ready for some well-earned time off as well. I have been holding onto some ex...

  • Pitching is the centerpiece of young H-M-S softball team

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|May 26, 2022

Pitching is a key ingredient to the success of any softball team, and that will definitely be the case for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn in 2022. In addition to the importance of pitching itself, H-M-S's defensive alignment will depend on who is in the circle. As a result, versatility is a must for those who are not pitching. "Our pitching will be leading the team, with five girls who have worked hard in the offseason," said Hawk coach Stephanie Bronstad. Three of those five will see varsity pitching...

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|May 26, 2022

Coming off the first double-digit win season in seven years, the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn baseball team is setting its sights on even better things in 2022. Graduation losses leave some important positions to be filled, but Hawk coach Jeremy Gloden believes the return of six starters puts H-M-S in position to build on the strong finish to last year's 10-12 campaign. "Our goal is to continue the momentum we built last year with our program," said the third-year head coach. "I think double-digit win...
