    The weather was chilly, but the mood was warm last Saturday during the grand opening of Hartley's new pool. Local officials cut the ribbon at the new facility, which welcomed swimmers for the first time after two years of delays.     Each year, the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn fifth graders complete a flag unit in language arts class. They learn about flag etiquette, the history of the United States flag, and the different branches of the U.S. military. The students, along with their teacher, Angie Mayer, even go through each part of the U.S. Flag Code. At the end of the unit, the students are left with a better understanding of what the flag represents and how to show it respect. They then write an essay of 300 words or less...

    Scoring runs was a challenge for the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn baseball team during action last week. Playing at Holstein on May 20, the Hawks lost to Ridge View by a score of 12-1. The Raptors scored a run in the first inning, five runs in the second and two in the third. Four more runs completed their victory.     The 2024 Class 1A girls' state golf tournament was a learning experience for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's Gracie Knobloch. Competing at the American Legion Golf Course at Marshalltown, May 23-24, the junior placed 38th in a field of 78 competitors. Knobloch's final stroke total of 192 was 50 over par. She finished the first day's round with a score of 99 (51-48) and shot a second-day total of 93 (46-47). Knobloch parred two holes on Day 1 and made a birdie and parred three holes on Day 2.
