  • 1 year later, Hartley pool still empty

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Jun 8, 2023

The one-year anniversary of Hartley's new pool was observed with a celebration similar to its ribbon-cutting last June. There was none. "I understand that the residents of Hartley are eager for an update, but unfortunately I am not able to provide any substantive update or comment at this time," Hartley City Attorney Brandon Krikke said last week. Information and updates about the pool have been fleeting since its indefinite closure was announced last summer. It was supposed to open in June of...

  • Waiting for the wet

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Jun 8, 2023

The situation is by no means dire, but local fields could use a drink. "The corn is coming along pretty good, but where they're missing the rains, we're seeing slight leaf-curling," said Growmark FS agronomist Alic Mohni. "In places that have gotten the spotty rains, things are looking really good." The latest drought monitor map for Iowa shows all of O'Brien County in moderate drought with Clay County basically the same – only a small sliver in the northeast corner was graded one spot b...

  • Revised and reprinted

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Jun 8, 2023

"All the Kids On My Block" was so good the first time, author Dave Hoye decided to print it twice. "When it sold out, I had a lot of requests for it," he said. "It's more about the kids than it is me and telling their stories and situations." The book, which details and shares lessons from Hoye's 35-year counseling career, was first printed 10 years ago. This time around the Everly man has added three new chapters and included study guides after each chapter. "This way I hope to be able to sell...

  • DNR proposes new restrictions to prevent Ocheyedan River from drying up

    Jared Strong, IOWA CAPITAL DISPATCH|Jun 8, 2023

A rural water system in northwest Iowa would be required to idle its wells near the Ocheyedan River when its flow is too low, according to a Department of Natural Resources plan to keep the river from running dry. The Osceola County Rural Water System had sought the opposite and suggested removing its requirement to photograph the status of the river in low-flow conditions. The utility alleges that its role in the river's status is relatively inconsequential. But the state seeks to impose more...

Suffice it to say, Iowa Republicans had a “great” legislative session in 2023. With suffocating majorities in both chambers and a friendly face in the governor’s office, the GOP had little trouble pushing through its agenda with ease. Bills forcing taxpayer dollars to be used on private K-12 education and other school-related changes faced little chance at being stopped. Other issues of monumental importance to Republicans in 2023 – like book bans, transgender-related legislation and loosened child labor laws – also topped the list. And then...

  • Pedley's Ponderings

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Jun 8, 2023

I’m not good at building things – even when I help my son with a LEGO set I’m bound to fudge it up once or twice. Though my handyman skills are nil, I can sure break things. I can do it without even trying, too – just this week I broke the laminate edge off the corner of a countertop when it hooked my hip while I was walking by. This “talent” is only helpful on projects that require demolition. Though I haven’t broken out the sledgehammer since we’ve moved to Hartley, I have been busy slamming my trees, shrubs and other vegetation with...

  • The Writer's Pen

    Janet Bronson|Jun 8, 2023

It's that time of year again, my favorite weekend of the year. I dubbed it Curbside Supply a long time ago. In fact I used to call the city clerk's office to inquire when it would be. At first she was puzzled until I could explain. The next time I called she knew exactly what I was calling about. We went to Worthington the other day for Bruce's physical therapy. When we pulled into town, I noticed lots of trash and other stuff out at the curb. I got so excited and told Bruce, " Look – C...

    Rep. Randy Feenstra|Jun 8, 2023

On July 1, 2020, the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) – which was signed into law nearly two years earlier – entered into force, formally replacing the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). True to its original intent, this law reduced trade barriers for our farmers, opened new markets for American agricultural exports, and established a revitalized framework for free and fair trade between the United States, Mexico, and Canada. To date, Mexico and Canada remain our nat...
