    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Jun 17, 2021

The City of Hartley will have almost half of a $1.1 million infrastructure project paid for before the first shovel pierces the ground later this summer. The Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA) on June 3 announced Hartley was the recipient of a $500,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG). The money will help cover expenses for upgrades to the lift station located at North Eighth Avenue East and Second Street Northeast that serves a large portion of the northeast quadrant of town....

  • 6 inches or less!

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Jun 17, 2021

Though the recent heat wave has slowed growth in local yards, the Hartley City Council is still hoping to clamp down on residents who don't mow. Council members on Monday approved changes to the city's grass ordinance. Now, people who fail to keep the length of their grass at 6 inches or less will receive only one warning per calendar year instead of receiving official notice each time their yard is breaking the rules. A certified letter will be mailed the first time a property owner offends,...

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Jun 17, 2021

Despite vocal pushback from one member, the Hartley City Council on Monday voted to give city employees wage increases ranging from 3 to 8 percent. The base increase was 3 percent, with other employees like the police chief (8 percent), police officers (6 percent), city administrator and superintendent of public works (5 percent), and some others receiving more. According to discussion, wage hikes that were higher than the base rate were given for good job performance. "I try to keep the employe...

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Jun 17, 2021

Royal city council members agreed to purchase a mower and to submit a bid for a used street sweeper during their meeting on June 9. Maintenance Superintendent Sherman Nielsen presented pricing for mowers. The options range from $8,000 to $11,000, depending on the particular makes and models. Nielsen and Lance Kruse tested one unit but would also like to try out a Bobcat mower. According to discussion, a Bobcat is more expensive; however, the dealer will offer a municipal discount that reduces the final price. Another advantage of the Bobcat is...

  • The Writer's Pen

    Roger Brockshus|Jun 17, 2021

My kids and grandkids, and even my wife, shake their heads at my choice of electronic entertainment. I have a Zenith radio that I got in 1967 as a graduation gift and it is perfectly usable. I’ll have to admit that it doesn’t fit with the décor inside our house, but a few pieces of duct tape and splotches of paint don’t bother anything in the garage. It was a good unit in the day of mostly AM radios, and through a little TLC and coaxing, it’s still a good unit. Besides, if it dies tomorrow...

  • Iowa legislators sound off on HF 743

    Jun 17, 2021

In one of the most underrated bills of the legislative session, the Iowa Legislature found a way to make adoptions more affordable, with an ultimate goal of making them free. That’s right. Free adoptions. A few years ago, the state started the adoption tax credit program. Additionally, the State of Iowa began a program to defray some adoption expenses through the Department of Human Services. But we knew we could do better. The State of Iowa has contracts with lawyers throughout the state to provide legal services for criminal defendants. T...

  • Pedley's Ponderings

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Jun 17, 2021

I like to think of myself as an optimistic cynic. I always hope things pan out positively, but rarely do dreams line up with reality. Such is the case this spring... er, early summer. Never has the phrase, “Is it hot enough for ya?” been worn so thin and we’re still more than two weeks away from the Fourth of July. This month has been one heck of a hot one. I feel especially qualified to moan on and on about this subject. As you might remember from my previous gripes in this space, our 104-year-old Ocheyedan home has nary an air duct in it th...

  • From Our Files

    • June 20, 1946 A swarm of bees invaded Hartley’s business district and settled in the Knapp building just above Nott’s electrical shop. They were very much in evidence which caused many pedestrians to make a wide detour of that area. Rain caused the bees to disappear, but it was believed they were holing up for another attack somewhere within the recesses of Knapp’s corner building. A Sioux Center woman received minor cuts when she ran into the rope that had been put across the main street of Hartley while the street department was painting th...

    Iesha Toft, S-N Contributor|Jun 17, 2021

Things are beginning to take shape as the Clay Central/Everly Elementary playground in Royal gets a much-needed facelift. The old equipment was recently removed. Soon, existing pea rock will be pulled back where the new gear will be placed and graded to level things off. This second step should be completed by the end of the week. Once the ground is level, the district will give word to the playground equipment company, which will install the equipment before the 2021-2022 school year begins....

  • Scarcity of hits and runs

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Jun 17, 2021

The Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn baseball team found generating offense to be a difficult proposition in three losses last week. In a 2-1 loss to Akron-Westfield on June 7, the Hawks only had three hits and only one baserunner during the final four innings. Both teams scored a run in the first inning. The Westerners combined three walks and a single to put their run on the scoreboard. H-M-S answered as Jordan Ortega was hit by a pitch, Dawson Schiphoff singled and Jacob Cates hit a double to tie the...

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Jun 17, 2021

Competition in the War Eagle Conference heated up last week, and Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's softball team found the going tough. The Westerners (No. 8 Class 1A) scored on an error in the first inning; pounded out six hits and scored six runs in the second; and tacked on five runs in the fourth on three hits. Taya Mason...
