The fate of a new swimming pool in Hartley will hinge on local residents supporting it at the ballot box. According to information discussed June 24 during a special city council meeting, a portion of the estimated $3 million price tag will need to be financed by a bond. The city's current debt limit is $1.7 million and it cannot borrow more than that for the new pool, which will need help from fundraising contributions and additional city monies. Hartley officials will also apply for special...
Joel DeJong is in favor of tweaking one of the Midwest's most well known sayings. "I'm 6' 6" and I've got some cornfields looking me in the eye," he said. "Eye-high by the Fourth of July is really where we'd see a lot of cornfields right now." This year's crop is progressing well, said the Iowa State University Extension & Outreach field agronomist. Great growing conditions and adequate precipitation amounts have made corn sprout high in recent weeks, and with warm temperatures heading into...
Despite a contentious discussion, City of Hartley employees will get a raise this year. The council voted 4-1 on June 24 to raise salaries and wages by 2.75 percent. Council Member Mary Westphalen cast the lone dissention due to concerns about certain benefits for the city's salaried employees. To the editor: The Iowa Utilities Board (IUB) is proposing the use of eminent domain with wind and solar energy. Eminent domain is the right of a government to expropriate private property for public use. This means even if you do not give a wind developer or utility company access to your land, the IUB could (according to this proposal) still run transmission lines through your property because they claim wind energy is a "public utility." One could argue renewable energy is not a public...
One year ago, the title of this column was, "The flag is more than a fashion statement." In it, I wrote about the history of our great flag and my concern that it is trivialized when its image is seemingly used everywhere on everyday items. My worry seems trivial now. One year later, we see our glorious flag set on fire, ripped apart, and desecrated in vulgar ways – by American citizens on American soil. This Fourth of July, we find ourselves at a pivotal moment in America. The asphyxiation o...
