  • Maybe next year

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Jul 9, 2020

Any hopes for a traditional September in Clay County were abruptly squashed July 2. For only the fifth time in its 103-year existence, the Clay County Fair will not be held this year. Officials announced last week that the COVID-19 pandemic would make it impossible to hold a safe event for fairgoers, staff members, exhibitors and entertainers, consequently forcing organizers to push everything to 2021. "No matter how hard we tried, we couldn't find a way to give you the entire 'World's Greatest...

  • Petrich joins Hartley Police Department

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Jul 9, 2020

New Hartley police officer Joshua Petrich felt a career in law enforcement calling him at a young age. "I was actually going to go to school to be a teacher, but my senior year I was set up to go on a ride along with the Estherville Police Department," he recalled. "It seemed like the right place to be and felt like what I wanted to do." Petrich was hired as Hartley's third full-time police officer in May. He replaced Caleb Creech, who left Hartley in April for a new job with the Emmet County...

The king and queen will be named during a coronation ceremony on Sunday, July 19 at the Wayne Maas Memorial Stage in Primghar. The Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn High School Class of 2020 will cap an unusual school year under unusual circumstances Sunday afternoon. Commencement exercises will be held following a two-month wait. The COVID-19 pandemic put things on hold back in May, but high school Principal Nate Hemiller is simply excited H-M-S can send off this year's graduating class the right way. "They deserve this and they deserve a graduation," he said. "I'm glad we can finally give it to them." This year's ceremony comes...

  • Rules, rules, rules

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Jul 9, 2020

Staff members and residents at Community Memorial Health Center in Hartley are gearing up for the facility's first visitors in nearly four months, but they need to memorize some rules first. The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) last week released guidelines for long-term care facilities to follow once they reopen to visitors. According to CMHC administrator Janette Simon, family members have already been setting up visits, which begin July 13. "We're a little apprehensive about opening...

  • Fourth of July fireworks fun met with few issues

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Jul 9, 2020

Hartley Police Chief Joe Hengeveld's job gets a little noisier each June and July. As has been the case for the past three years, the local police department has kept busy over the past month responding to fireworks-related incidents. Hengeveld estimated only five or six complaints were called in this year, but he and other officers came across approximately two-dozen violations while out on patrol. "That's roughly the same as last year," Hengeveld said. "It's pretty hard to find where people...

  • In Trouble Again

    Roger Brockshus|Jul 9, 2020

The only real trouble I had in school happened when I wasn't paying attention. This might occur in the spring of the year, when a young boy's fancy turns to anything but the three R's. Sometimes the winter gets boring, and it's easier to think about basketball games than it is to concentrate on schoolwork. Then there's autumn, my favorite time of the year – not because school has started, but because football games and hunting seasons are underway. How can a person concentrate on schoolwork w...

  • Toft's Thoughts

    Iesha Toft, S-N Contributor|Jul 9, 2020

As we venture through COVID-19 and tiptoe among the guidelines and uncertainty, we are finding solace and much joy in our quality family time. We try to see our "Grandma and Grandpa Greats" once a week and we usually see my in-laws and parents once a week, if not every other week. We understand that many don't have this important and blessed luxury, so we do not take it for granted and try to make the most of our time with one another. During our visits with our "Greats" we bring along two books...

    • July 12, 1945 Those who could stir themselves at that hour saw the eclipse of the sun in Hartley. At a few minutes after six the moon started its downward course across the sun. The eclipse was about 77 percent complete. It was the first time since 1932 that one been seen here. The Hartley light plant boasted of being the official United States weather station for this section. Weather instruments reporting both temperature and moisture had been installed. Once again Hartley demonstrated to its fighting men that it was backing them 100 p...

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Jul 9, 2020

How do you spell relief? V-I-C-T-O-R-Y. Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's baseball team hadn't been on the plus side of the scoreboard prior to their June 30 game at George-Little Rock. So when the visitor's score read "3" and the home team's said "1" at the end of the game, the Hawks had plenty to celebrate. "For me it was relief," Hawk coach Jeremy Gloden admitted. "That was the first time when we put a full seven innings of really good baseball together." Junior Sam Heyn followed up a strong pitching...

  • Late innings trip up H-M-S softball team

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Jul 9, 2020

Opponents' late-inning scoring sprees kept Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn winless in three softball games last week. An eight-run fifth inning in South O'Brien's 13-2 win was a sign of things to come. The Wolverines added four runs in the first inning and another in the third during the June 29 contest in Hartley. "We were able to keep ourselves in the game through our defense," Hawk coach Carissa Post said. "But then our defense slowly started to fade and we ended up with costly errors." H-M-S cut the...
