  • Crumbling down

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Jul 16, 2020

The scene Monday morning at 509 Main Street in Sanborn was decidedly bittersweet for the onlookers who gathered on nearby sidewalks. With cellphone cameras recording, they watched the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Middle School get reduced to rubble as an excavator methodically tore through the south entrance. The building's demise had been planned for nearly two years, but many in the crowd found the sight tough to absorb. "It's pretty sad," said Candice Lyman, a 1973 graduate of Sanborn High School....

  • Hartley swimming pool staying put

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Jul 16, 2020

If local voters approve its financing, Hartley's new swimming pool will have a familiar home whenever it opens to local swimmers. The city council on Monday voted to keep the pool inside Neebel Park where it currently resides. However, Hartley residents will first need to approve a bond issue to finance its construction before any work can begin. The council and members of the pool taskforce committee briefly discussed moving the pool's location last month, but the change was deemed too costly....

  • COVID class bids long-awaited farewell

    Nick Pedley|Jul 16, 2020

It's safe to assume the Class of 2020 won't be taking much for granted as high school disappears in the rearview mirror. "The way our senior year ended was incredibly unexpected," Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn senior Joseph Ahlers told his fellow classmates during Sunday's commencement ceremony. "This pandemic taught us that at any moment your life could change completely. It made us realize how important all of our memories truly are and how important the people we made those memories with are to...

  • Barn raisin'

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Jul 16, 2020

One of Hartley's oldest residences is getting its first addition in more than 120 years. A new barn is being built at the historic Patch-Eeten House on First Street Southeast. Construction of the building began late last month after the old barn, which was originally used as a carriage house, was torn down when renovations were deemed cost-prohibitive and unfeasible. Jeremy Pearson, who's building the barn with Ron Hengeveld, said completion is tentatively set for early August. "It's been...

  • Council OKs financial incentives for new industrial park

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Jul 16, 2020

The Hartley City Council is hoping an incentive package will attract new businesses to the City With a Heart. Council members on Monday unanimously approved real estate pricing and financial incentives for the new industrial park on Highway 18. The 20-acre site is currently under construction, but it's expected to be finished by the end of the year. "We built it so businesses would come here," said Council Member Mary Westphalen. "You have to give incentives." Lots in the industrial park will be...

  • The Writer's Pen

    Roger Stoner|Jul 16, 2020

I am an old Western fan, meaning I'm old, and a Western fan. I'm not talking about the silent movies, in which Westerns were very popular, and I'm not talking about when the "singing" cowboy was popular after the "talkies" started. I'm talking about the shoot 'em up, horse chasin', bank robbin', cattle russlin', saloon girl kissin', barb wire fence hatin', soap opera with horses. Westerns that my Dad and I started watching in the late 1950's right on through until the 1970's. Now you cannot...

  • Pedley's Ponderings

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Jul 16, 2020

I've never worried more about someone I had never met before than I did when my friend Ryan told me his brother had contracted COVID-19. It was late-April and I had been working from home for the better part of a month. People were still taking the pandemic seriously back then, and most of the state was shut down. It was the same situation across the country – bars, restaurants, movie theaters, playgrounds and everything in between had locked up in an effort to prevent the virus' spread. That w...

  • Grassley: History gives us plenty of valuable hindsight in 2020

    Sen. Chuck Grassley|Jul 16, 2020

With Independence Day fresh on our minds, let's remember why we celebrate and defend our blessings of freedom, liberty and justice for all. In these uncertain times, America's promise is more important than ever. There's a saying among the faithful that God won't give us more than we can handle. Arguably, 2020 is putting this message to the test. When Iowans rang in the New Year, no one realized the nation's historic employment, wage growth and record-setting economic expansion would be...

  • Toft's Thoughts

    Iesha Toft|Jul 16, 2020

Can you believe it is already mid-July? Summer is whizzing by faster than I care to admit. COVID-19 hasn't slowed us down as I shuttle children to and from work, drivers ed, swim lessons and other daily activities. The days are busy and flash by in the blink of an eye, but they're all filled with a lot of family fun. My husband and I recently celebrated our ninth wedding anniversary. Due to our busy schedule, our four children made us a delicious meal of homemade pizzas and cupcakes. They...

    • July 19, 1945 Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Lock received a package from their son-in-law, Flight Officer Donald Hebbel, who was a pilot in the Pacific theatre of war. Among other items there were Japanese mats and two ashtrays, one decorated with a Japanese coin bearing the image of Mount Fujiyama and the other bearing a model P-38 made by Flight Officer Hebbel. Rumor was rampant that infantile paralysis was spreading in Hartley, but there was no justification for such statements. City health physician Dr. E. Pfeiffer did urge that precautions be t...

The No. 2 team in the Iowa Baseball Coaches Association's rankings combined a perfect game on the mound with a potent offense that capitalized on every opportunity. "Overall we competed, but it was not enough to beat a team like that," Hawk coach Jeremy Gloden said. "Defensively we were a little timid at times and made some...

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Jul 16, 2020

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's softball team saved one of its best performances for the final game of the regular season, but it was not enough to avoid a 6-5 loss to MMCRU on July 8 at Remsen. The Royals scored all their runs during the first three innings, including four in the opening frame. They also scored once in the second and third innings. H-M-S also scored in each of the first three innings, one run at a time. A two-run sixth inning pulled the Hawks to within 6-5, but they failed to score...
