If anyone left Neebel Park dry on July 12, they should have received an award. The Hartley community's "No Pool, Big Problem" event was well attended for the second-straight year, drawing youngsters to the park for water-related fun. The event was hosted by the Hartley Fire Department, Hartley Emergency Ambulance Rescue Team and Hartley Parks & Rec. Featured were water fights, Slip n' Slides, sprinklers and other wet fun. Kids also had the chance to ride the fire department's vintage truck on a...

The construction project at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn High School has resumed after a three-week delay due to the level of arsenic in soil at the site. During a project update at Monday's board meeting, engineer John Hight said test results indicated higher-than-allowable levels of arsenic in soil that was removed and piled at the site. After reporting the results to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, work was suspended due to potential groundwater issues. Graves Construction was given two...

  • Howard passes on history

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Jul 20, 2023

There's a unique story behind every item in the Patch-Eeten House Museum's military exhibit – just ask Howard Borchard. The Hartley man knows every detail behind each photo, uniform, gun, sword and patch in the upstairs display. After all, he spearheaded its creation and has spent 11 years overseeing its growth. "It's pretty well filled up now," Borchard said. "There are tons of stories here." Borchard passed the torch on Monday to Roy Wohlert, who will now head the exhibit with his p...

  • Setting priorities

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Jul 20, 2023

A second estimate of what it will cost to repave Main Street in Royal confirms what the first one indicated – it will be expensive. Several months ago a paving contractor estimated that to completely rebuild Main Street from Huberg Trucking to the fire station, as well as three intersections, could cost approximately $900,000. Brian Schmidt, an engineer with Kruse, Cate & Nelson, P.C., recently offered a similar estimate. According to discussion at the July 12 council meeting, Schmidt also e...

  • Attacking the ash

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Jul 20, 2023

The roar of chainsaws may become a familiar sound in Everly during the coming year. The city council on Monday agreed to start budgeting money to pay for the removal of ash trees on city-owned property throughout town. Members felt it was important to get a plan in place due to the emerald ash borer, which has been confirmed in 97 of Iowa's 99 counties. "We need to be thinking about that coming our way," said Mayor Ron Thompson. "It's here, it's out at Scharnberg Park and it's around our area."...

  • From Our Files

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Jul 20, 2023

    • July 22, 1948 Power spraying equipment again made the rounds of the Hartley business section, spraying backs and fronts of the buildings for continued protection against disease-carrying flies. Heat followed by heavy rains tended to destroy the potency of the DDT spray. A damaging hail and windstorm swept in from the northwest. Most extensive damage in the immediate area was reported south of Melvin where crops were virtually wiped out, a number of buildings blown down, trees uprooted and some poultry and hogs were killed. Out of the hail a...

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Jul 20, 2023

One benefit of finishing with a better record in War Eagle Conference play is that a team has more players earn all-conference recognition. That is the case for the 2023 Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn softball team, which landed five players on all-conference teams due to a fourth-place finish. Gracie Knobloch was named to the all-WEC first team for the second straight year. The sophomore led the Hawks in nearly every offensive category, as well as starting 17 of their 23 games in the pitcher's circle....

Junior Bradley Van Beek was named to the all-conference second team. The first-time selection was the team leader in hits and runs...

  • Some improvement, but not enough for baseball team

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Jul 20, 2023

The Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn baseball team showed signs of improvement during the 2023 season, but was unable to win more games. The Hawks finished with a 5-16 overall record, which is similar to their 2022 mark. However, H-M-S slipped to 1-9 in War Eagle Conference play. Statistically, the team showed improvement in pitching and defense, but did not hit the baseball as well. Four seniors end their careers after contributing in many ways to the program. The number of varsity games they played...

The 2023 softball season got off to a strong start for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn, with wins in five of the team's first six games. But the Hawks' record fell to around .500, and with losses in five of their last six games, finished at 12-14 overall. Twelve wins are an improvement of two compared to the 2022 season. H-M-S also finished with two more wins in War Eagle Conference play, posting a 5-5 record. Hawk coach Stephanie Bronstad is looking to see more growth in the program in the coming...
