  • 'A labor of love'

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Aug 12, 2021

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Elementary students are in for a surprise when they return to school this month. Librarian Vella Smith recently completed the finishing touches on a 70-foot mural in the library. It includes characters from 55 children's books, and Smith was eager to see the looks on kids' faces when they view it for the first time. "They're going to be blown away," she said. "I think everything turned out quite well." From Harry Potter to the Cat In the Hat to The Pokey Little Puppy, the...

  • Lift station replacement delayed a month

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Aug 12, 2021

The start of an infrastructure improvement project in east Hartley has been delayed, but the lull isn't expected to affect the completion deadline. Engineer Wes Boyer reported to the city council on Monday that the lift station replacement project will need to hit pause for a month to allow time for an environmental impact review. The lull will push bid letting on the project from September to October. The review is a requirement of the city's Community Development Block Grant, which is paying...

Children at the Hartley Community Daycare Center are seeing green. Brown's Lawn & Landscaping completed the second part of a two-phase improvement project at the facility over the past week, installing artificial turf to the east half of the playground. The addition complements new rubber mulch and play equipment that was installed in June. "The kids love it and we are excited to have this big project finished," said daycare director Kaity Harms. "It looks really nice and is a great addition to...

  • Pedley's Ponderings

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Aug 12, 2021

I'm no gardener. The only thing I'm good at growing is weeds, and I don't even try to do that. Nonetheless, our yard does feature a garden. It's under Kaity's charge, but she's taken a rather laissez-faire attitude about it this year. I think she gave up on it after the green beans died before they even got going. This year's patch features broccoli, peppers, strawberries and tomatoes. The berries turned out horribly, only producing tiny morsels that seemed to have more seeds than fruit. The...

  • Ernst: A crisis of many sorts

    Sen. Joni Ernst|Aug 12, 2021

A humanitarian crisis. A national security crisis. A public health crisis. That’s the reality at our southern border. We’re nearly seven months into the Biden Administration, and they are refusing to step up and take action. It’s hard to ignore the facts. 210,000 illegal immigrants were encountered at the southern border last month – the most we’ve seen in over 20 years. Just recently, about 50,000 migrants who illegally crossed the border were released into our country without a court dat...

  • Norm Borlaug and Dolly Parton: Two peas in a pod

    Randy Evans|Aug 12, 2021

It is hard to imagine Norman Borlaug ever joining in singing “Jolene” or “9 to 5.” I can’t picture him harmonizing in a heart-tugging rendition of “I Will Always Love You.” This is not a knock against this kid from Cresco, Iowa. He excelled in other ways — like saving upwards of one billion people from starvation through the revolutionary plant-breeding work he did in the decades after World War II. Borlaug developed new, high-yield, disease-resistant varieties of wheat, maize and rice that a...
