    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Aug 18, 2022

The 2022-23 school year at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn will begin next Tuesday and the district is ready to welcome students to their classrooms. Initial indications are that H-M-S will have more students to welcome. Final enrollment will not be determined for some time, but the district is anticipating over 30 newcomers. That trend seems to apply at the high school, where at least 11 new students are enrolled. "We continue to get more students, which is a great thing," Principal Nate Hemiller said...

  • Water tower painting bids are confusing

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Aug 18, 2022

"It's not apples to apples. It's confusing." That was Royal Mayor Josh Toft's comment during the August city council meeting as he passed out bid sheets for painting and repairing the water tower. As anticipated, three companies did submit bids. However, they were not consistent in terms of the work they proposed to do to the tower. One proposal called for inspecting and painting the tower and 30,000-gallon tank, which is what the council wants to have done. Another bid covered replacing the lad...

  • Dumping issues

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Aug 18, 2022

Problems at Everly's dump sparked considerable discussion during Monday's council meeting. According to Council Member Shaun Iske, the area has been littered with untagged toilets, appliances, wood entertainment centers, windows, TVs and more. He suggested the city purchase a better camera system to monitor the site and implement a stricter fine schedule for those who violate the rules. "It looks horrible down there again. It's bad," he said. "It's turned into the old dump." The location was...

That only means one thing: The summer of 2022 is experiencing its final flickers of sunlight. What a summer it was. The season began with waves of anticipation here in Hartley as locals geared up for the opening of the community’s new pool. • Pedley's Ponderings

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Aug 18, 2022

August typically provides a rude awakening from the summer slumber here at the newspaper. Activity on the news front picks up with increased activities like town celebrations and other happenings, and internal items like our fair results and fall sports preview tabs keep us on our toes. Admittedly, my mind has been elsewhere. We finally got our 105-year-old Ocheyedan home sold and have entered the chaotic phase of the moving period. We officially close Sept. 6, but there’s so much to do before then. First on the list is crossing off l...

  • Evans: Iowa gives too little attention to care of its elderly population

    Randy Evans|Aug 18, 2022

Doctors, nurses and all manner of technicians and support staff have performed heroically under circumstances that often were trying. But the death this year of a patient at a Centerville care center has struck a chord with many Iowans – and not just because COVID claimed another life. The reaction has ranged from sadness to anger because the person’s treatment was unprofession...

  • The Writer's Pen

    Cheryl Stanley|Aug 18, 2022

What a lucky childhood! The South Dakota State Fair was the star attraction of my hometown, Huron. Each visit was a sensory overload to grade school and junior high kids who weren’t at all excited about the beginning of school. (These were the days before adult supervision and oversight were deemed necessary.) My younger brother was an expert at locating “free stuff” at seed corn dealers, political tents and hearing aid sales tables. These treasures were stashed in large shopping bags brightened with advertising slogans. Our loot consisted of f...
