Last week's ribbon cutting ceremony at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's new middle school was a bit surreal for Superintendent Patrick Carlin. "Under construction" is all the administrator has ever known since he joined H-M-S in 2018. With the junior high in Sanborn now open and the district's massive facilities upgrade project complete, he's breathing a sigh of relief. "It's exciting to have it all come to culmination," he said. "We've been doing it for three years, and to see it all come together has...
Hartley officials are hoping to win big money for its big pool project. The city council on Monday authorized City Administrator Erica Haack to apply for Community Attraction and Tourism (CAT) Program Funding for the pool project. CAT is administered by the Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA) and assists projects that provide recreational, cultural, entertainment and educational attractions in Iowa communities, as well as sports tourism. Haack said the city is applying for $375,000. "A...
A change in buildings to start the new year is not all that's different at the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Middle School. To increase instructional minutes, OREO time is no longer on the schedule. The 15-minute homeroom period had been used to create positive relationships, work on social skills, and monitor and help with students' academic progress. According to Principal Corey Ramsey, the change both increases instructional time and reduces unstructured time. Seventh and eighth graders will also...
An abundance of weeds at Everly's sewage treatment facility sparked discussion on Aug. 16 among city council members. Weeds have exploded on the bare ground that surrounds the ponds, which recently underwent significant upgrades. The problem has made planting new grass nearly impossible and Mayor Brad Behrens wants to see the issue addressed. "They're a mess. There's no way we'll get seeding done by September," he said. "Until they're gone, we're never going to get it seeded." Behrens suggested...

The Ocheyedan River west of Everly had more grass growing in its bed than water flowing through it Tuesday evening. This summer's drought has greatly affected streamflow in local rivers, creeks and ditches, with many having dried up or been reduced to a trickle. According to the latest report from the U.S. Drought Monitor, a majority of Clay County is experiencing severe drought-like conditions, with a finger in the northeast corner classifed in extreme drought. O'Brien County was faring...
I generally despise traveling. Long road trips make me recoil, and plane rides have my legs feeling cramped before I even board the bird. Right now, though, I wish I was 35,000 miles above the ground. My and Kaity’s wedding date is fast approaching – Sept. 4 is right around the corner. Final plans are being wrapped up and arrangements made, but I’m lucky to remember what day it is each morning. There are too many balls in the air for my narrowly-focused brain to make sense of it all. I’m currently working on the Sept. 9 edition of the Sentinel-...
Marking a milestone at H-M-S Middle School It goes without saying that Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn’s new 5-8 grade building is night and day compared to its predecessor. A brief walk-through will reveal hulking ceilings, bright windows, open spaces and a gymnasium some area high schools would envy. Much like the district’s new elementary school, the place is a gem. The middle school’s opening put the coda on H-M-S’s $18.9 million facilities project, which in addition to both a new elementary and junior high, significantly upgraded the high school....
Clay Central/Everly Elementary was buzzing with excitement Tuesday morning on Day 1 of the 2021-22 school year. The day started off with students sitting next to the Maverick bell taking their turns at first-day-of-school pictures. Shortly before 9 a.m., CC/E Director of Student Services and Title 1 teacher Michelle Huntress took the mic in front of the building. Huntress kindly spoke to the children about the exciting year ahead and how all adults in the building are teachers that should be...

Clay Central/Everly on Monday invited families, students, staff and the community to its 2021-22 school year open house. Families walked through the classrooms seeing all of the new additions and familiar comforts that CC/E has to offer. As they toured the grounds, they also met staff and greeted teachers before heading to the new playground for a picnic. A meal of watermelon and hot dogs was served by friendly staff members while children tried every new piece of equipment they possibly could....

• Aug. 29, 1946 The 1946 4-H fair and Iowa centennial celebration which was held in Hartley was a huge success in every way. The Hartley Chamber of Commerce and the American Legion, who were the sponsors, reported the celebration was a financial success in addition to being enjoyable for all. The Hartley Public School was preparing for the first day of classes on Sept. 3. With a large freshman class anticipated, it was expected that the high school e...

Eilers is H-M-S's new head football coach, taking over the program from Tyler Horkey who accepted a position at Spencer. As he settles into his new duties as a coach, Eilers sees his role as an instructional interventionist at H-M-S Elementary as an opportunity to help students build a solid foundation for the future.
